Didn't We Invent Basketball?

by DCScrap, Our Book of Scrap

In case you missed it, the USA Basketball team lost yesterday in the Pan-Am Games held ... uh ... somewhere. They lost to worldwide basketball powerhouse Uruguay. Yeah, that's right. Uruguay.

Can we get the Dream Team back together? And by get them back together, I mean those same guys right now, at their current ages. They'd still be a better team than what we have now.

From CSTV:

"They were very cohesive. Uruguay really played like a veteran team. They knew their personnel. (Martin) Osimani and (Nicolas) Mazzarino, their guards, just controlled the game and then anytime they needed to they went to (Esteban) Batista and he made a play. We've got to learn that about ourselves and how we're going to make plays down the stretch," said USA mentor Jay Wright.
Yeah, uh, Jay ... I wouldn't be mailing out that resume to any big basketball programs right about now. Other coaches to make sure your alma mater doesn't hire any time soon include University of Alabama's Mark Gottfried and Yale University's James Jones. Although I totally understand why the US team has a Yale coach on its staff. When you think of basketball superiority, you think Yale? Wasn't Jeff Ruland of Iona available?

The fun isn't over though. The U.S. has another shot to upend a universal basketball factory in Panama on Thursday. What's the spread on that one, I wonder?

Basketball, invented by that country north of the USA also known as Canada...

Try again. Naismith was born in Canada, but "in 1891, while working as a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith was asked to make a game that would not take up much room, was not too rough, and at the same time, could be played indoors. He had no idea he would invent what would become the most popular indoor sport in the United States."

Last time I checked Massachussets is in the U.S.

The Pan American Games are being held in Rio de Janeiro, btw.

So we can blame it (the loss) on Rio, huh?

I'll be here all week, folks.

Interesting that you took this opportunity to take a shot at Ruland and Iona. Guess you forgot that he won 3 championships in 8 years before last year's disaster, which was due to 3 starters lost for the season. Dick.
