NBA Referee busted by FBI...

by Don, With Malice...

This is huge. The NBA are investigating referee Tim Donaghy over sports-betting on NBA games, including games on which he was an official. According to the report from FOX Sports on MSN, Donaghy has refereed 68 games in the 2005-06 season and 63 games in 2006-07, including 20 playoff games (5 last season).

Allegations are that Donaghy has connections to organised crime (he was approached by low-level mobsters), and the impact this has is enormous. The fact that a person who can directly affect the outcome of a game has a wager on it is absolutely staggering. It is alleged that Donaghy made calls during games he officiated to affect the points spread of a game. And betting? We're not just talking about the odd $100 here & there, Donaghy bet thousands. Now, NBA referees make pretty good money... but we're not going to see Joey Crawford 'make it rain' any time soon.

Given the reaction NBA Commissioner David Stern reacted when the aforementioned Joey Crawford had 'words' with Tim Duncan, you can just bet (sorry... bad choice of words! ;) ) that he's busting to pass judgment from up on Olympus - but the NBA has been told by the FBI not to comment at this time. But you can bet your britches that this doesn't help the case for putting a pro team in Las Vegas.

The fact that an NBA referee did this is disgusting. Games in which he officiated will be treated with suspicion - and rightfully so (as a Lakers fan, I'm asking that the entire '06/'07 season should be declared forfeit, and the results for the entire season be canceled!). It just seems that nothing is sacrosanct any more. And what was the idiot thinking? That he wasn't going to get busted for it sooner or later??? Sounds to me like he got in hock for too much, and left himself open to being 'approached' by the mob. Doesn't it all read like a bad CSI episode - just minus the corpse. And I think Donaghy can just thank his lucky stars that he got caught before that ended up being his role in the affair.

Pete Rose is pretty sure Donaghy always bet on his own team to win. Oh, wait. He's suppose to be impartial.

Never mind.
