Over the weekend, I was looking up articles to include in my weekend column at Awful Announcing. It's a newspaper critique/roundup called The Press Buffet. So I browse online newspapers and pluck interesting articles, basically.
This week I happened to be looking at the Kansas City Star and ran across this article about a Kansas City MLS player named Jack Jewsbury. In reading about his humility and team spirit, it hit me that this man might be the anti-Marbury. Given the similarity in their names, I felt the comparison must be made.
Hometown Hero: Stephon Marbury grew up in New York City and currently plays for the Knicks. Jack Jewsbury played his collegiate soccer at St. Louis University and now gets his kicks on the other side of the state in Kansas City.
Skeelz: Starbury is known for his quickness and scoring, despite technically being a point guard. Jewsbury scored 59 goals in a single season during high school, but has steadily dropped back to fill team needs in college and the pros. He is now a right back, playing primarily defense and setting up his teammates.
Quotability:
"It's been kind of tough, but it's an adjustment I know what I'm capable of on the basketball court. I'm playing the way I been playing , I have not been playing as aggressively as I have been playing on the basketball court because its from trying to get everyone involved and into the game" - Stephon Marbury
"So far, we’re a little over half way through, and things are going fairly well. Obviously, there are still things I can improve on, like holding the line with Jimmy (Conrad). But I’m happy with the way things have gone. For a guy like myself, the important thing is to be a consistent starter. The more minutes I can get, the more I can help this team as much as possible. Hopefully, the team and I will continue to get better." - Jack Jewsbury
Family Life:
"That's my better half, my better ho...my better half, my wife." - Marbury
"My parents, her parents, my brother- and sister-in-law and their two kids all (drive up from Springfield and) move in for the weekend,” he said. “It’s quite the crowd. But we all get along well." - Jack Jewsbury
Charity Work: Stephon Marbury is one of the most giving people in the NBA (not counting Shawn Kemp's sperm donation campaign), including a recent speight of $1 million dollar pledges to New York city insitutions.
Jack Jewsbury makes less than I do, so I'm going to cut him some slack on this one.
Media Savvy: Marbury - blogs occasionally for the New York Post.
Jewsbury - Appears in a photograph on Flickr. No word on whether he uploaded it himself.
Future Aspirations: Marbury - May play ball in the inferior Italian league because his wife likes it there.
Jewsbury - Would most likely give up left testicle and wife in order to play in vastly superior Italian league.
Championships: None in college or pros for either player.
Who Might Play Him in a Movie: Marbury - Jamie Foxx.
Jewsbury: Mark Hamill.
So there you have it - the tale of the tape clearly indicates a tie. Besides, I got to write a post about Starbury shooting his mouth off but still being a good guy, and got to talk about a guy named "Jewsbury" without coming off as anti-semitic.
Good times.

Hell, I was scared when I started reading after the title...
But... you give it a tie???
Starbury's commentary on his sister a while back surely puts Jewsbury in front... ?
Jack gets another point, and the win, for not having a nickname like Starbury. As to the photo you point to, it's mine, taken to support the interview I did with Jack in Jan 2006 - http://sgfsoccer.com/2006/01/28/an-interview-with-jack-jewsbury/ for my regional soccer site. Jack graduated from Kickapoo HS in Springfield MO, same school as Brad Pitt, so I caught him while he was home for the holidays.
