I don't pretend to be smart. Actually, yeah I do. Big words scare me. But I like to think I'm good at two things -- logic and sports. However, much like Denzel Washington in Philadelphia, I need something explained to me like I'm a 2-year-old.
I just got done watching NFL Live (btw, does this show need to be on every day during the longest offseason in all of sports?) and they were discussing the Michael Vick stuff. Tom Jackson, who I think is great, said something that struck me as strange.
He said with the trial date set for the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend, right at the start of the season's homestretch, there was no way Vick should play the 2007 season.
Jackson was talking about how Vick shouldn't play, not because it would be a distraction for the team, and he didn't say he shouldn't be allowed to play. Jackson said that with the trial going on, there was no way Vick would be able to focus on playing football for the Atlanta Falcons. Vick himself would be too distracted.
Here's what I don't get. Didn't Kobe Bryant show that playing with a trial hanging over your head is not only doable, but one could play up to their usual ability while the trial was going on?
Vick is facing six years in prison. And call me crazy, I don't think he spends a day in jail. But Kobe was facing life in prison. Life in prison, and he was dropping 40 on a nightly basis.
I understand Vick isn't Kobe, but to say he can't play this year because he'd be distracted is an uninformed and silly statement. But then again, I was watching ESPN, so why am I surprised?

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Vick is the Falcons quarterback and it would be difficult to develop the right offensive chemistry if he's constantly leaving in the middle of the week to deal with the trial. I think.
I think OMDQ's right about team chemistry. Personally, I think Vick would be fine to play with the trial going on but his teammates probably wouldn't be down with that program. He's not going to be that distracted, though. The lawyers he's paying a beach house in the Hamptons aren't going to be sitting there formulating legal strategies with him.
I also think Jackson was trying to find a way to say he shouldn't play without actually saying it.
i think team chemistry is a reach. it's six years max. somehow the lakers found a way to play together with a life sentence looming. the falcons should be able to do the same.
i would also say both players are the most important to each team's success.
oh, and what the feed said, too. i don't think vick will need to be there to go over strategies with the legal team. and if he's needed, i'm sure he can do stuff before/after practice/meetings.
