We all know by now that Sergio Garcia bogeyed the final hole of The Open Championship. We all know that that bogey put him in a playoff in with Padraig Harringon, who double-bogeyed the 72nd hole. We all also know that he lost that playoff and lost the championship. But before your buddy finishes the phrase, “Sergio is done, if he didn’t win this one, he will never win a major,” punch him in the mouth.
Sergio is too good not to win a major, and he will do it relatively soon. The 2007 Open marks his eighth top five finish in a major, there is no doubt he has the game. This one will hurt, but he will take solace in the fact that everyone else in the field screwed up the 18th as well. Ask Harrington and his double bogey, ask Romero and his unbelievable scorecard on Sunday (no pars for last 11 holes), they will tell you that is a pretty tough hole. Sergio can also take solace in the fact that he is pretty damn confident in his ability as he is sure that he got screwed as:
"I rarely get many good breaks," said Garcia when asked about a shot that hit the pin on the Par 3 16th and careened 20 feet away. "It's not news in my life," he said. He was also pissed off about having to wait for 15 minutes for players to clear that green on the 18th following his tee shot. So, he has no shortage of reasons for this loss, and obviously no shortage of talent.
How many times did we have to hear that Phil, “Just didn’t have what it takes to win a major championship”? Do you know how many top five finishes in majors Phil had before he broke through with a win and unbelievable vertical leap at the 2004 Masters? The answer is nine. That is pretty damn close to eight which bodes well for Sergio winning one of those majors pretty soon, I think. Sergio is also seven years younger than Phil was when he won his first major. So he has at least seven years before you can start making those awful, garbage “this guy will never win a major” comments. Greg Norman was one of the most notorious “chokers” in golf history and still won two British Opens. To say this guy won’t win a major, especially since his is only 27, is ludicrous, inflammatory and potentially legally culpable.
Most importantly, Sergio used to date Martina Hingis, a seven time grand slam winner on the WTA. The fact that he was porking a major winner in another sport can only mean that Serge will one day step in the spotlight and grab the reigns for himself.

Those Who Have Porked Martina Hingis May Throw the First Stone
