In this spot every weekday I'll be hitting on the top sports stories from the previous day, a little movie madness and even a little television, among other things. Though, the TV will be severely lacking until we hit the fall. Feel free to dispute any and everything I may say here. As in the future I hope to publish a comment or two. But, only the good ones, so make it count! Anyhow, let's get to it...
Top Story From The Weekend: Beckham-Mania!
I don't know about you, but David and his frosted tips aren't going to be enough to get me to watch the MLS. No matter how much I'd like to squeeze the fun out of Posh and her bags. Soccer just isn't my thing, and it hasn't been since I graduated 3rd grade. Sure, if I'm channel surfing and I catch a shootout I'll watch it. Or maybe I'll stop to watch the final few minutes of a World Cup match. But the MLS? Absolutely not. We all know the best players earn their paychecks across the Atlantic and that's not going to change anytime soon. The best players won't so much as touch a blade of grass on an MLS field until their near the end of, or past, their prime. Beckham is no different, and his arrival - no matter how well he bends it - will not change the standing of Soccer in America. It will remain at the bottom of the U.S. sports ladder. Just above Lacrosse, below Hockey and right alongside Arena Football. Am I wrong? Can Beckham's arrival really push the MLS into mainstream relevance? Or will this story just line David's pockets and pay for Posh's closets, while our attention remains elsewhere??
Here Come the.... Cubs??
Believe it or not, Chicago's curse ridden Cubbies are on fire right now. Picking up right where they left off before the all-star break with a sweep of the division rival Astros. I'll be honest, before the season started I didn't think the Cubs could do much. The first few months of their season confirmed those thoughts. But, right now they look like the best team in the Central and the young Brewers are in for a fight. The Cubs are 15-3 in their last 18 games and as long as Ted Lilly and Carlos Zambrano are holding down the front end of that rotation I like their chances. Especially when you consider the offensive firepower they have. I'd say Soriano, Lee and Ramirez are more than enough but they're getting key contributions from guys like Ryan Theroit and Mike Fontenot. If the role players continue to play well the Cubs have got to be the favorite in the Central. Not that the Brewers are playing horribly. Their a solid .500 in their last 18 games (9-9), unfortunately for the Crew .500 isn't going to cut it. Not with the Cubs just 3 1/2 out heading into today. I'll tie myself to the Cubbies to win the Central, but I'd expect them to be heading home early there after.
Congrats Philly, Now You Have Something to Boo: 10,000 losses
I don't have a lot to say about this, other than that I find it ironic. Philly fans are famous for their tough love approach. Booing even WINING teams when they have a bad night. Congratulations Phillies the Braves will join you in a few years.
Weekend Box Office Top 5
1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
2. Transformers
3. Ratatouille
4. Live Free or Die Hard
5. License To Wed
I'm not a Harry Potter guy and I never will be. So ff you looking for some kind of recap on that your in the wrong place. The only one of these movies I've seen thus far is Transformers. While it wasn't a great movie it was far better than expected. It had a nice mix of comedy, action, and attractive women running around for my taste. Leading me to whore it and Megan Fox when I returned home from seeing it. And I didn't even play with the damn things as a child. I'd probably give it a 7/10 if I had to rate it.
Knocked Up comes in at #8 this week and I finally seen it yesterday. It was funnier than expected and I'd advise a trip to the multiplex to check it out if your into that brand of humor. Which you probably are if your here in the first place. 8/10
Television
Best Of Last Night: Entourage *Spoiler Alert*
Rating: 7/10
Though the season started slow, Entourage has begun to pick up steam since the boys returned to the streets of Los Angeles. The E and Billy feud is highly amusing, though I'd say Billy's leading the pack right now with his "Suits Suck" t-shirt last night. Ari also seems to be getting back into a groove as the trick he pulled on Ledger's agent was genius. And something only Gold could pull off. I also have to add the Medellin tattoo was a nice touch.
If your looking for an ESPY's critique your in the wrong place. I caught first twenty minutes or so before surfing elsewhere. I'm sure many of you did the same.
Tonight's Best Options:
8 PM
Giants at Cubs (ESPN) - I'll probably watch this.
High Stakes Poker (GSN)
Entourage (HBO)
9PM
Two and a Half Men/How I Met Your Mother reruns (CBS)
Dirty Jobs (Discovery)
That about does it for me today. This "column" is a work in progress and I'll be editing, adding, and removing things as I go along. For those wondering, the name's BD and I come to you via Sports Show On Mute. Here's a little bonus T N' A via The Big Lead, I'll catch ya tomorrow.
