The Trade Deadline swept through our life like a young harlot out for only our money and not the true love we are always looking for. It entranced us for one day and now we are left with a lifetime of wondering and second-guessing. Did our teams make the right trades? Could Eric Gagne burn down the Bronx himself? Who the Hell names their kid Royce? The Winners and Losers have been called out. There is little left to do except to play the games and see who will become the champion, right? Wrong. The need to break down why the Atlanta Braves did what they did is a must. Keep up with me, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Bobby Cox is dying. He has to be. Otherwise why would the Braves make all of these moves? It's become obvious to me that since the Braves gave up a ton of prospects and a Salty Man and, in essence, have announced to the world that Bobby Cox is not long for this mortal world. The time is now says John Schuerlholz. There is no time to dilly dally, or fiddle faddle around with. The Braves must win and they are going to use Bobby Cox's impending death as their battle cry. No longer will there be a 'Tomahawk Chop' at Turner Field (or whatever they are calling it), instead there will be literally tens, and maybe a hundred fans each game in a Grim Reaper costume.
The Braves are obviously left with a dying manager, but a very healthy team. They were able to pick up the bullpen depth they needed along with a huge bat to fill the void that Andruw Jones and his insatiable appetite for Big Mac's has left on the Braves this season. While they could still use a starting pitcher, they have set themselves up nicely for a run at the playoffs.....and one final hurrah in the life of Bobby Cox.
