Chris Young: His Initials Speak Volumes

by Kirk, PartMule

Chris Young (CY) should be the National League Cy Young award winner in 2007.

Please don't blame Chris Young (CY) for the ineptitude of the perennially underachieving bats of the Padres. It's not his fault the lower-left coast Padres get no love from Bristol, the national media and blogoshere, or even from media within their home state. You can't ignore him because the small-market Padres generally are just a bunch of over-achievers, that typically under-achieve in the playoffs.

This season, CY is doing it and doing it right. Here are a few reasons CY = Cy:

  1. An impressive one-round brawl with Derrek Lee on June 16th. Gotta love haymakers from a 6' 10" Princeton graduate. Beautiful to watch.

  2. An absurd 1.93 overall ERA -- maybe this should have been #1 on the list, but haymakers rule.

  3. From May 1st, if you throw out the coming off the DL start at the Cards Aug. 9th --where he gave up four runs in six innings -- CY's ERA is a ridiculous 1.11 over 16 starts.

  4. He's endured five Padre 1-0 wins this season. Of which, he's only docketed two wins on his ledger.

  5. Let his 6' 10" shadow stand taller than stable mates Jake Peavy and Greg Maddux. Yes, Jake's numbers are sick. Greg is a presence. But CY has received zip for run support this year, including his last two starts where the Pad's have thrown up goose eggs.
Bottom line is the man would have 15 wins by now with a smidgen of run support. He's definitely the Padres MVP and has kept their .243 lumber swinging asses not only above water, but in the thick of the pennant race.

CY absolutely, unequivocally equals Cy.
