The cream rises to the top.....when the going gets tough, the tough gets going....and so on and so on. No one has distinguished themselves among the other candidates in the NL MVP race and that has opened the door for Ryan Howard to push his way to the top.
The month of September is going to decide who wins the NL MVP Award and last night Ryan Howard got a head start on the competition. With his walk-off two run homer to beat the Mets, Howard pulled his Phillies within four games of the Metropolitans in the NL East and within 3 games in the NL Wild Card race.
After battling through an injury this season, Howard has come back with a vengeance and opposing pitchers are the one's feeling the pain these days. While his statistics don't match up with his 2006 NL MVP season, if Howard is able to carry the Phillies into the postseason you can be sure that is going to garner him more MVP votes than meaningless homers down the stretch.
With the return of Chase Utley to the Phillies lineup Howard is going to see more pitches to hit and opportunities to drive in important runs. As we come down the home stretch and into the playoffs Howard is going to be the player to watch in the National League.

God I hope not. That would be a joke.
Doesn't he lead the league in strikeouts?
Yep, but with a strong September and leading the Phils into the playoffs...it could be enough to get it done since he's up there for homers, rbi's, ob%, etc...
