Sunday's NASCAR race at Pocono helped the storied venue live up to its billing as one of the most boring tracks on the circuit. The longest straightaway in the series, plus three mostly manageable turns equals long greens and an absolutely dominating performance by Kurt Busch, who overcame the longest losing streak in his career for the win. Folks, it wasn't even close. I didn't link a photo of Kurt mostly because he looks like a repressed gay accountant.
The real fireworks, however, came from Saturday's Busch Series race in Montreal. Twas the second Busch race outside of the U.S. of A, and the first to be held in Canada, whose collective racing tastes skew more toward open-wheel action. Like the race in Mexico City, Montreal is also a road course, which spelled havoc for the field toward the end of the race.
With only four laps remaining, the race went green. And as the cars were getting up to speed, as they hit the first turn, several cars piled up in the turn. The melee happened behind the leader, Robby Gordon, who was bumped out of the way by Marcus Ambrose under caution. But here's where it gets good.
As the field drove slowly under caution, Gordon passed everyone up to return to the front of the pack. When the race went green again, it took all of two turns for Gordon to knock Ambrose out of the way and out of contention. Even though Robby was black-flagged, he drove as though he were in the lead.
When all was said and done, Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag, coming from worst-to-first, a near-anomaly on a road course. Harvick did the usual victory burnout, but so did Robby Gordon, who celebrated as though he won.
From looking at ESPiN's coverage, it certainly seemed like Robby had a point. NASCAR, however, saw it differently. Robby's antics got him booted from Sunday's race at Pocono.
Lesson learned: if you pretend to be a winner on Saturday, you can pretend to race on Sunday.
If you wanna see the antics for yourself, just check out the video.
