Jake Peavy is filthy. He is absolutely dirty. I'm beginning to think that there is not a clean thing about the way he pitches......and all of those statements are compliments. It's as if Zeus himself has climbed down off of Mount Olympus to throw lightning bolts every which way through the strike zone. Ok, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration...
The best part about watching Peavy pitch is that you never know where the ball is going to end up.....and I don't think Peavy knows either. This season Peavy hasn't thrown two pitches that have moved the same direction. One pitch is moving to the outside corner of the zone, the next pitch to the inside corner of the zone. Some go high, others go low. With his ferocious, aggressive wind-up and follow through Peavy is absolutely dominating hitters and it looks like that is going to continue in the second half of the season.
The season of dominance continued as Peavy destroyed the Arizona Diamondbacks last night (7 ip, 0 runs, 3 hits, 10 k's), and now he has an 11-5 record on the season with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. Each one of his starts is filled with strikeouts and hitters heading back to the dugout while shaking their head. It goes without saying that he is one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young Award this season for his efforts. After he wins that award he very well may head to Darfur and save them. It would probably take an early exit from the playoffs in order for him to fit that in before the beginning of the next season but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...or something like that. I digress.
I haven't seen a pitcher this dominant since....maybe Greg Maddux during his heyday. While Maddux would finesse his way through the strike zone fooling hitters, Peavy goes right at them begging them to take their best shot as he stands on the mound laughing on the inside like an enraged madman (that's how I see it?). The intensity level in the entire stadium seems to rise each time Peavy toes the rubber this season as he prepares to throw his next pitch filled with filth to the hitter. Next time you get a chance to see him pitch on tv don't miss it because it is absolutely putrid and amazing.
