So, is Dancing a Sport?

by Sanchez, Shot To Nothing

On Thursday the fifth annual World Tango Championships will get underway in the 'Home of Tango', Buenos Aires. But can the world of competitive dance be accepted as a legitimate sport?

Well, let's take a look at this World Tango Shenanigans. 485 couples from 22 different countries have entered, which is far more teams then any other World Championship I can think off and the event goes on for ten days, which sounds like a whole lot of Tango if you ask me. I wonder where Cash is? (sorry, sorry...)

There are different categories ofcourse, Ballroom Tango for us wimpy 'new agers' and Traditional Tango for those who no doubt believe there can only be one. The prize money is pretty low; only $1,600 for winning the whole schaboodle, but the title 'Worlds Best Tango Dancers' is surely worth a beer here and there. Tango is supposedly pretty intense and either way, dancing for ten days straight without popping something illegal is almost certainly a feat of physical endurance.

So, its tough physically and requires a lot of training, the competition is fierce and numerous but the title itself is probably worth more than the prize money... hmm... it's a toughie.

I guess it comes down to personal opinion; if you believe that Cheering and Figure Skating are legitimate sports, then you're more likely to accept competitive dance into the sporting fold. But the fact that the results are based on judging and not physical achievement surely must count
against it. What do you think?

Me? Well I'm a figure skating fan and I love cheer-leaders so I guess that makes me all for it. No I'm not gay. Kiss my ass.
