Team Canada beats Team USA...

by Liston, Introducing Liston

... at being horrible at basketball. Team USA snuck by the Canadians today 113-63 to take their record to 3-0 in the FIBA Americas tournament. Carmelo Anthony lead Team USA in scoring today with 25 points while Canadian coach Leo Rautins lead Team Canada in the looking-like-evil-Iceland-coach-Wolf-Stansson-from-the-movie Mighty Ducks 2 category.

Does anybody really think they are going to beat Team USA? Get real. And all you non-Americans can save your What about the sixth place finish in 2002? or What about the bronze medal in '04? talk. I don't care about that. You know why I don't care about that? Because I, like all American men, am ignorant. I am beatifully, American-ly(?) ignorant and there are two things in the world American men never expect to happen: 1. We never expect a woman to be stronger than us and 2. We never expect foreigners to beat us in any sport, period. However, I'm not so bold as to so say foreigners could never beat Americans at anything. I fully expect:

  • Canada to beat us at being passively racist

  • Germany to beat us at being white

  • Africa to beat us at being hungry

Seriously though, how bad does it suck to have to play against this American team? You know the guys from Venezuela and whatnot are like, "Damn it, these guys haven't cared about this for years. What gives?" I'll tell you what gives, Americans are tired of hearing about how "global" basketball has become. Basketball is America's game. I'm well aware that the guy that invented basketball was Canadian. As you saw at today's game, we're still pissed about that, and for the first time in years we have assembled a team that wants to win this thing. They might as well just go ahead and throw in the apostrophe and change the title from the FIBA Americas Tournament to the FIBA America's Tournament.

"Things I Fully Expect Other Countries to Beat Us At" should be its own post. Some suggestions (just from this hemisphere)...

Mexico to beat us at northward migration.

Peru to beat us at devastating mudslides.

Brazil to beat us at supermodels bedded by Tom Brady.

As an Australian, I am looking forward to this:

Yes, you Americans have a team in there.

Whilst I'm sad that you're not actually in the same pool as Australia, I'm looking forward to September 30th - you play South Africa. Should be... interesting.
