Throwing Knives: What If? Thursday

by BD, Sports Show On Mute

It's Thursday again and that means I'm playing the "What If?" game once again. This week I'll be channeling my inner General Manager as I wonder whether or not signing Mike Vick fresh out of prison would be worth it. How about the Rangers dropping 30? Absolutely insane, but my fantasy team loves it. Also, Tom Brady's a daddy and Curt Schilling can see himself playing for the Devil Rays. But, first per usual you get Adele Silva. Another in a long list of women I've never heard of, enjoy.

What If I Were An NFL GM
Every GM is in a completely different situation. Those who make the decisions for perennial losers, such as the Lions or Browns, would almost certainly eliminate the possibility all together. Considering the circus isn't worth the hassle if your team's not going to be winning either way. While I wouldn't put anything past Matt Millen I'd make absolutely no sense for the Lions to sign him.

Then you look at the mid-level team's that could use a play maker. Whether Vick's willing to play another position would be a big question for many GM's. As that could certainly have a large impact on his suitors. In the mid-level I'm thinking teams like Tampa Bay and Washington who could certainly use Vick in part-time QB, RB/WR capacity. Team's who have the talent on at least one side of the ball to win now and potentially in 2009.

The teams you can immediately eliminate are those who are at the top of the heap every year. The Patriots, Steelers etc. None of those teams would even give Vick a look.

The question is, where would Vick fit best and have the most impact? My best guess is in Chicago with the Bears. Rex Grossman and Brian Griese are not the answer at QB and Cedric Benson may not be the answer at RB. Vick's certainly not going to be signing a big contract post-prison which makes the Bears an even better fit. He's unique play making abilities would finally give the Bears defense someone they believe in under center. Looking at the current rosters this is the best fit. What will they look like in 2009 and beyond? Who knows. But, if he could sign now the Bears would certainly make sense.

How About Those Rangers?
30 Runs in a baseball game is absolutely ridiculous. Nevermind the fact that they also put up 9 in the second half of yesterday's double header. The Rangers smashed 6 Home runs, including 2 grand slams in the rout last night. It has many wondering if the MLB should have a mercy rule this morning. I'd say absolutely not. Complete dominance like this is so rare that a mercy rule isn't needed. Plus, you'd eliminate the possibility of a legendary comeback. I know, coming back from 27 down is unlikely. But hey, stranger things have happened.

Schilling Can See Himself As a Devil Ray
Schilling basically says he could see himself if Tampa if he felt like his presence would have an impact even after he's gone. I'm not sure how much of an impact Schilling could have on the Rays but anythings possible. Especially when you consider the impact Kenny Rogers has had on the Tigers pitching staff since last season. I, as much as anyone, was boggled by the Rogers signing. Yet, his off the field contributions have been much bigger than anything he's done on the field. If Schilling can effect the likes of Scott Kazmir and James Shields the way Rogers has Justin Verlander and Andrew Miller this would be a good move for Tampa Bay.

Tom Brady's A Daddy
It's official, Tom Brady has fathered the first of what should be many children. It's a boy, and has a rocket arm, if you were wondering.
