Tiger Blog: PGA Championship 2nd Rd.

by dswinder, Sons of Sam Malone

Tiger is about to tee off on the opening hole, and thus, we'll be getting started soon...Be sure to follow along, comment, whatever....I just hope this effort isn't completely in vain...Things are looking good for Tiger today. The lead is back to 4-under, and yesterday's leaders are dropping like flies...But like I said, we'll get started in about 5 minutes so while you're waiting, head on over to SoSM to get your preview of the day to come, but be sure to come back soon...

2:53 PM: Oh the twirl...Good opening tee shot from Mr. Woods...You know it's on when you see the twirl and walk before the ball lands...

2:56 I'm just watching TNT to follow Tiger's round today...So there may be some gaps...I just couldn't handle anymore of that online simulcast...

2:57 Great second shot...5-6 feet for birdie...Ata boy Tiger...

3:00 They just showed Colin Montgomerie, from just off the green, skull it and send it 20-30 yards over the green...Are we sure that's really Monty? Wait it is a major..That's to be expected from him...

3:04 John Daly used to have an AMAZING 'stache...

3:05 Opening birdie for Tiger...Back to even...4 back...

3:09 I love how John Daly is waiting to tee off on a par 4 because people are still putting on the green...Priceless...

3:10 He hit it right of the green, but by God, he got it far enough...The first hole, and he drives the distance of the green...No accuracy though...Who cares...

3:15 They just showed Tiger again, and now he had about a 5 mile birdie putt...I like his chances...

3:19 John Daly made a bogey after driving the distance of the green...I'm not really sure how you do that, but John sure as hell got it done...Oh, by the way, Tiger just left his 5 mile putt within inches...That was an amazing lag putt...

3:28 I'm wondering if they plan on showing Tiger again...And as I wonder...There's Tiger with a booming drive in the first cut...Good tee shot...

3:36 Good approach by Tiger...!5-20 feet for birdie...I think he's on today, but since there's no wood around, I'm making no such claims...You saw what happened yesterday...

3:45 Great tee shot on 4 from El Tigre...I love how it was just pointed out on TNT that Tiger is swinging with a lot of confidence TODAY...Just today? Hmmm...

3:55 Just a quick note of importance...Scott Verplank is in the clubhouse at 4-under...All alone with the lead...Keep in mind I predicted him as the favorite other than Tiger on Wednesday...

3:56 Tiger hit his birdie putt on number 4...1-under...3 back...

4:03 Tiger's tee shot on the 650+ yard par 5 5th went in a fairway bunker...No eagle chance today...Birdie? Maybe?...Please...

4:08 Unbelievable high cut from the bunker...Tiger just aimed horizontally out into the fairway and cut it up towards the hole...He's in the first cut...Simply amazing...

4:12 Unbelievable shot by Tiger...Great, great chance at another birdie...That would be 3-under in the first 5 holes...

4:18 BIRDIE!...2-under...2 off the lead...3-under through the first 5...I refuse to say he's on today...I refuse...I WILL NOT jinx it...

4:22 Another great shot...Just barely rolled off the green...Should be an easy par...

4:27 Thanks to the commenter...Good to know I'm not alone out there, and yes...Go Tiger!...Finally a nice anonymous commenter...

4:37 Thanks to commenter number 2...Glad to be of service...

4:38 Yeah, we know you can watch on PGA.com...That's how I followed Tiger for this live blog yesterday...Thanks for the advice sir...

4:39 Terrible, terrible shot by Tiger...It's ok...He's Tiger...He'll get it together...FYI: He's still at 2-under, 2 back, playing 7...

4:43 Yeah, but keep in mind, Tiger fell apart on the front 9 yesterday (he started on 10)...Today he started on the front 9 and is 3-under...If he repeats his back 9 of yesterday, he'll finish the day at 5-under...4-under for the tourney...

4:46 Time for some unabashed self-promotion...Be sure to head on over to Sons of Sam Malone tonight to get a recap of today's round and a preview of Saturday...I should have it up by 9-ish Eastern time...It would be earlier, but they play so damn late...

4:48 Tiger made his first bogey of the day, but it was a good putt...Just a little too firm...You know it's not that bad when I'm not worried...and if you didn't, then now you do...

4:51 No problem...I'll be more descriptive...Tiger is just about to tee off on number 8 a par 3...245 yards...He's now 1-under, 3 off the lead held by Scott Verplank...

4:54 Just a note to all the readers that might not be familiar with Epic Carnival...We're a sports site...We're usually smart asses, and we're pretty funny...At least we think so...If you like this live blog then remember to come back for the Fed Ex Cup Championship and even next year for all the majors...I will be out of town this weekend so no blog on Sat. or Sun., but that will be a rarity for all big events...Ok back to the golf...

5:01 Tiger left his birdie putt just short on number 8...Easy par putt to follow...

5:05 Hahaha that's funny...I'll check and see if Satan is available...That might fit your style more...Hiding behind your anonymity...Ha!

5:08 I'm not liking the lack of Tiger coverage...I'll update you as soon as I'm updated...

5:12 Well, I gave in...I'm tired of the lack of Tiger coverage...I had to turn on the Tiger cam on PGA.com...

5:14 Tiger hit his approach to within a few feet on number 9...Easy birdie coming up...Ata boy Tiger...

5:15 I just realized that there is no delay on the online feed...I should have been watching it the entire time...

5:17 Birdie tap in...Tiger just finished his front 9...3-under today...2-under on the tourney...2 back...and actually I just realzied that online is more of a delay...That's kinda weird...It showed Tiger's approach first, but his birdie putt after TNT did...Oh well, I've got 'em both going...Tiger's about to start the back stretch...I'll be right back...

Back 9

5:21 Good 5 iron off the tee on the 366 yard par 4 10th...Right down the middle...

5:24 John Daly hasn't hit a fairway today...And he's only two back...How can this be...I need some explanation...How about Stina Steinberg? She could answer my question...

5:27 Ridonkulous...Tiger just stuck another approach to within 5 feet...This reminds me of the 2000-2001 Tiger...Simply amazing...

5:34 Another birdie...Tiger is now through 10 holes...He's 3-under, 4-under on the day...He's now just 1 stroke off the lead...Keep in mind I predicted a one two finish of Tiger and Verplank...

5:37 Par 3, 173 yard 11th...Tiger sent his tee shot straight at the pin...He hit right around the hole and bounced just off the green, but he's got a fairly makable birdie considering he's off the green...He's got only about 10-15 feet...It should be an easy par at the least...

5:45 Tiger putted from the fringe, and had the perfect line but just left it short...Easy tap in par now...Man he's playin' good...Knock on wood 1 billion times over...

5:48 Another good tee shot for Tiger on number 12...12 is a 458 yard par 4...

5:54 Tiger just hit his approach in a greenside bunker on 12...It could be an easy shot if it's on an uphill lie...Otherwise this could get dicey...

5:55 Just learned from the online feed that Southern Hills closed the course down for Tiger and Phil to practice...and I'm not talking practice rounds...

5:57 Oh...Tiger has a bad lie in the bunker...He's fried egg...Maybe he can salvage a par, but looking at his preparation for the shot he's looking at where the next shot will be from, and it ain't close...

5:59 He's got about 20-25 feet for par...A bogey isn't too bad after that lie in the trap, though...

6:01 I guess when you're on, you're on...He just hit that long putt to save par...Unbelievable...

6:07 Great 3 wood down the middle on the par 5, 537 yard 13th...If he keeps this up, we may be in store for a repeat of last year's 5 stroke win...

6:09 Oh no...bad mental images...Remind me to send TNT an email asking them to never mention Phil Mickelson and 69 in the same sentence again...

6:14 Well, the online simulcast just stopped showing Tiger, and is just showing a scoreboard...Hopefully it will comeback...If not I guess we'll rely on TNT and their delays for the rest of Tiger's round...

It's been a hot day at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma...

6:21 Tiger's second shot on the par 5 13th went into a greenside bunker, but he had a great lie, and then proceeded to put his bunker shot to within feet...All that's left is an easy birdie putt to give him a share of the lead...Geoff Ogilvy just tied for the lead as well...So if Tiger hits his short putt he will be in a three way tie with Ogilvy and Verplank...

6:26 Tiger made his birdie...

6:29 I wish...No they're just images by Getty and AP photographers...These particular ones came from golf.com...

6:32 223 yard par 3 14: Tiger hit his tee shot just over the green into the fringe...More than likely puttable...About 15-20 feet at most...Another good shot...

6:39 Well...Tiger just hit his birdie from the fringe to take sole possession of the top spot on the leaderboard at 5-under...He is lighting it up today...5-under on the tourney, 6-under on the day...Ogilvy just went to 5-under as well...So now it's Tiger and Geoff in a tie at the top...

6:47 I'm sorry to say I missed Tiger's tee shot on 15, but he was in the fairway so I assume it was good...His approach sits at about 20 feet from the pin...Another birdie is a big possibility...

6:54 Another birdie...He is on...Tiger is now 7-under on the day, 6-under for the tournament and in the lead all by himself...He's putting on a clinic...

7:01 Geoff Ogilvy dropped a shot...Tiger now has a 2 shot lead on the field...

7:04 Gil Bates...Well said...

7:05 Tiger's drive on the long par 4 16th found a bunker, but his approach is about 15 feet from the pin...This is just amazing...I feel privileged to be witness to such a display...

7:11 He made a good putt at birdie, but just missed...Good par...Still a 2 stroke lead on the field...

7:14 Ogilvy just dropped another shot on 18 to fall to 3-under...He's now 3 behind Tiger...Scott Verplank is alone in 2nd at 4-under 2 back of Tiger...

7:20 Tiger's drive on 17 is in the fairway...He's got a short approach to the par 4's green...

7:21 His approach is below the hole, about 15 feet away...Another good birdie opportunity...Tiger is looking at the all-time major championship single round score...This is just ridiculous...

7:25 He just left his birdie putt short...Good par though...Still a 2 shot lead...7-under on the day...Just amazing...

7:30 Another great drive by Tiger on par 4 18th...

7:38 Another great approach...A great shot at another birdie to give him a 62...It would be the major championship record...It's a clinic...A clinic I tell you...

7:42 I just realize I haven't mentioned Elin today...I still love you Elin...I've just been entranced by your hubby's amazing display of sheer athletic ability...

7:45 Tiger literally lipped out his birdie putt for a 62...Final tally...63 (tied for the best major championship round ever), 7-under on the day, 6-under on the tournament, 2 shot lead on the field...Amazing...Upon the replay, his putt didn't lip out. It went down, and then came out...I'm not really how that's physically possible, but at the same time, I'm not really sure as to how Tiger does what he does either...

Well, that's it...It was a pleasure people...I would be back tomorrow, but I'm headed out of town for the weekend so you're going to have to do without...Be sure to head on over to SonsofSamMalone.com in about and hour and a half for a day 2 recap/day 3 preview...And remember that I'll be live blogging Tiger's weekend rounds at the Fed Ex Cup Championship...So come back for that, or better yet, come back every day...Thanks for reading...It's been fun guys...Take it easy, and it it's easy take it twice...
