NASHVILLE -- Tennessee Titans' quarterback Vince Young is this year's cover athlete of the popular Madden video game series, a prestigious honor that has been said to have derailed the careers of many promising athletes. But Young has decided that he'll combat the so-called Curse the best way he knows how.
Young has already gone out of his way to embrace the Curse, flagrantly violating team curfew rules, resulting in a suspension from the Titans' first preseason game.
"It's like that Madden ad campaign," Young said. "People said I would prove the curse isn't real. So I have to go out there and prove them wrong. That's just how I do."
There are some who feel that the Titans' chances this season to be a contender in the AFC are limited. With improving competition across the league and the defending, albeit weakened, Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts in the Titans' division, pundits have already declared the Titans all but done.
"I don't read that junk," Young said emphatically. "Mostly because I can't read. Y'all saw those Wonderlic scores. But whatever, I figure if people say there'll be a Curse on me, I might as well go out and live up to the hype."
While previous cover athletes have been beguiled by injury and inexplicably underwhelming performance, Young plans on taking a different path.
"I can't sit back and wait for this Curse to break my leg or some shit.
"A few DUIs, maybe a weapons possesion charge...the world's really my oyster," said Young. "Maybe I can stab Pacman in TNA, that'd be completely out of nowhere."
