Tony Gwynn Makes Kevin Durant Appear Strong

by WCK, 100% Injury Rate

I know a lot of athletes let themselves go after their careers are over. I mean let's be honest, you spent years keeping yourself in excellent condition to perform on the field and now you just want a break. But sometimes that break lasts a little too long, and your body starts to atrophy at a ridiculous rate.

And sometimes you were never really in shape during your career. That just makes your post-career meltdown even worse.

And then there's Tony Gwynn, who's lowered the bar to such a degree it seems like he had to actively work to get this out of shape - which is an inherent contradiction.

As of 12 weeks ago, Gwynn could only bench press 40 lbs. according to the L.A. Times. Yes, you read that right - 40lbs. I'm not even sure how one benches 40 lbs., considering a normal bar is 45 lbs. And he could only do five pushups.

Luckily, in preparation for his Hall of Fame induction, combined with the embarrassment of being able to bench press only 40 lbs., Gwynn hit the weight room in some Wheaties fitness program. Gwynn managed to increase his bench press to 200 lbs. by his Hall of Fame induction and managed to rip off 25 pushups (note: pushups not done during Hall of Fame induction).

I'm glad Tony managed to get his bench press max back up to a respectable level, but how in God's name did he let it slip to 40 lbs.? I know invalids that bench more than that. We should probably keep our eyes on Mr. Gwynn. There's a chance he might ultimately turn into Jabba the Hut.
