You Will Get Nothing From Brandon Webb and Like It

When we did our MLB Awards voting here a few days ago, I put Brandon Webb third in my N.L. Cy Young vote. I had Jake Peavy at number 1, Tim Hudson at 2 (Homerism), and after some heavy debating I put Webb at 3.

Well, Webb did some climbing on my ballot after last night's game against the Braves. He pitched his third straight shut-out and extended his scoreless streak to 42 innings. The Braves have one of the best offenses in the league, yet Webb toyed with them like a dwarf among midgets.

"That's probably the best stuff he's had all year," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "To go through that lineup is unbelievable. I really don't know what to say about it."

I don't know what to say either Bob. I sat there and watched Webb mow through that line-up like Mark Chmura at a high school prom and all I could do was try to keep the bleeding internal. Webb is now 18 innings away from breaking Orel Hershiser's record of 59 scoreless innings which was set back in 1988.

Can Webb break that record? Well, if he keeps pitching like last night he'll sure come close. And with every additional scoreless inning he takes a step closer to another Cy Young. Jake Peavy is still the front-runner as he has a better E.R.A, more strikeouts, fewer walks, a better WHIP and 3 fewer losses, but Webb could change all of that in his next couple of starts.
