Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones got a little hot under the collar last night after their loss to the Phillies and gave us this great quote about the umpiring, or specifically, the calling of balls and strikes:
"The first pitch to me with the bases loaded was in my batter's box, inside," Jones told reporters after the game. "Now you tell me how I'm supposed to hit that. We have to get Questec here in this ballpark. We've got to. Umpires have got to be held accountable. That's Little League World Series stuff right there."Ok, let me break down this quote a little bit. First of all....if the umpires call it a strike, it's a strike. That's how the game works, sorry dude. Second, you don't have Questec there because you guys complained about it so much when it came out. Third, have you seen those kids pitch in the Little League World Series? Those kids throw gas.
Chipper gave us a little more to work with as he's apparently looking forward to automatic deductions coming out of his paycheck in the upcoming months. Again, about the calling of balls and strikes:
"It's a joke," Jones said. "I'm tired of it. And baseball can fine meJust a question real quick for you Chipper....do you remember a couple of pitchers that you used to have on your team named Maddux and Glavine? Do you remember how they were always given an extra inch or three on the each corner of the plate? Do you remember how nearly every other team complained about it? Well, Mr. Jones, meet karma. She may be unkind at times, but she makes her point. The Braves will have to adapt a little better than last night when they had two players tossed for arguing balls and strikes.
whatever they want. I do not care. Somebody's got to say something. I've got
more walks than strikeouts in my career -- I know what a strike looks
like."
"You're going to see frustration from now on as long as the officiating is
abysmal," Chipper Jones said. "Major League Baseball ought to be ashamed. It's
abysmal. It's awful. Not all of them but some of them. It's awful."

I don't think Kyle Lohse is really that comparable to Maddux or Glavine...
Still, I agree. Arguing balls and strikes will get you nowhere. But if anyone knows the strikezone, it's Chipper Jones.
The point was that the Braves received those calls for over a decade so Chipper shouldn't be surprised to see it start going the other way.
