College Football Week 1 Observations

by WCT, Wasting Company Time

First of all, I am not going to devote a whole lot of time to the App St-Michigan game, because there is nothing I could say that hasn't already been said a million times by now. But suffice it to say that Lloyd Carr was very lucky to wake up this morning still employed by the University of Michigan.

A few more thoughts:

- Cal is legit. They proved that Saturday night by comfortably beating a Tennessee team that is legit in their own right. Did they completely make up for the week one beat-down they suffered in Neyland Stadium last year? No, but they put the rest of the Pac-10 (including USC) on notice. If DeSean Jackson wasn't on the Heisman radar before, he should be now. He was on mine right about the time I saw this.

- Speaking of "legit," Wisconsin is now the favorite to win the Big 10 and should be a top 5 team after dismantling a (from what I hear) good Washington State team.

- This was probably lost in the euphoria over the App St-UM game, but Texas almost lost at home to Arkansas State on Saturday. The 'Horns needed to recover an onside kick in the final moments to eek out an eight point win over ASU. There are a lot of question marks on this team.

- Do not be fooled by what you saw last night and start thinking that Clemson is a good football team. They aren't. Those were two bad teams playing an ugly game last night. And this is typical Clemson. Yes, they have they now beaten FSU four out of the last five times they've played, but doesn't it seem like they are always just good enough to win at least one or two big games during the year to save Tommy Bowden's job, but just bad enough to have at least one or two inexcusable losses? Last year it was home losses to Maryland and South Carolina. I have been touting this team as a sleeper for too long! I'm done with them!

- Another point on last night: The fact that Florida State was able to get back into that game and was within a couple of plays of winning says more bad about Clemson than it does good about FSU. Because the 'Noles stink. The Drew Weatherford experiment has got to be coming to an an end pretty soon doesn't it?

- In last weeks preview I said that at 7pm we would know exaclty what kind of season it would be for Notre Dame. Sadly, this news was delivered about two hours earlier than I thought. Charlie Weis has got to pick one quarterback and win or lose with him, and that quarterback has got to be someone other than Demetrius Jones. In my opinion, they might as well put Jimmy Claussen in now and let him take his lumps. If they aren't going to redshirt him, and we're all in agreement that this is a rebuilding year - even though Charlie won't admit it - you might as well let the Freshman get some experience now.

- Another point on that game, most people are focusing on the fact that ND lost and are forgetting how good Georgia Tech looked. As weak as the ACC looks, the Jackets have as good a chance as anyone to win that conference.

- I don't care how many TDs Colt Brennan threw for, or how many points the Rainbow Warriors scored against whatever hapless team decided to take the nine-hour flight out to play them in the middle of the night, I can't take this team seriously untill they get on a plane, come to the mainland, and beat a decent team.

- Hopefully the matchups will start to get better this week, because watching blowout after blowout last weekend was somewhat disapointing.

How about some love for Tebow?

Good point. I clowned Tebow in my 20+1 ballot, but he looked pretty good on Saturday. But he has to put up those kind of games against SEC defenses to really earn respect.

Couldn't agree with you more.

No love for Matt Ryan and BC

Is that what this is going to turn into? Every week its going to be "no love for (insert prominent player from my alma mater/favorite team) from (insert alma mater/favorite team)?!" There are 119 teams in D-1 people I can't talk about everybody!

Although Matt Ryan did look good, but Wake Forest sucks.

I'm sorry boss. I didn't think it'd blow up like this.

Need not fret, I won't mention it again :)
