COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 4 OBSERVATIONS

by WCT, Wasting Company Time

For me, week four will go down as the week where everything went horribly wrong. I personally apologize for leading you astray with my picks on Friday. Ugh.

- Nice effort by Penn State on Saturday. Appalachian State put 34 points on Michigan's defense and the Nittany Lions could only muster 9. Apparently, playing teams like Florida International and Buffalo in the beginning of the season doesn't prepare you for league play. Who knew?

- I predicted that Louisville's pathetic defense would eventually hurt them when they started playing conference games. I certainly didn't think that the previously winless Syracuse Orange would be the team to do it. Wow was that ugly. After consecutive losses to Kentucky and F-ing Syracuse, do you think Brian Brohm is re-thinking that decision to come back for his senior season rather than jump to the NFL?

- That Bill Callahan contract extension is already paying dividends. In consecutive weeks, Callahan and the 'Huskers were pistol-whipped by USC, and needed a missed field goal at the gun to escape at home against Ball freaking State.

- Its time for us to start giving some love to Missouri. The Tigers are 4-0 and play Nebraska this weekend in a game that will go a long way toward deciding who will win the Big 12 North.

- If it is possible to watch a game and be more impressed by the losing team than the winner, then that was the case after I watched South Carolina-LSU. Carolina gave LSU all they could handle, in Baton Rouge, in a game that actually seemed to be closer than the score would indicate. The Tigers needed some big plays (including a brilliant and perfectly executed fake field goal) and some curious coaching decisions by Steve Spurrier to beat Carolina by 12,

- Speaking of South Carolina, after the game Steve Spurrier announced that Chris Smelley will take over at quarterback. So the 'Cocks QB is Smelley. This will provide hours of entertainment for me. By the way, I just turned 29 years old.

- How good can Colt Brennan be if Hawaii is able to score 66 with his backup in the game?

- I could not have been more wrong about Georgia Tech this year.

- Yeah, I guess I was wrong about that Georgia-Alabama game too. A very entertaining game though.

- Just when I'm ready to jump on the Florida bandwagon, just when I was ready to ask "why aren't they considered on the same level as USC and LSU?" They go and almost lose to Ole Miss.

- Caught some of the Washington-UCLA and Oregon-Stanford games. Besides USC, does anyone in that conference play any defense? Here are the scores of the four Pac-10 games that did not involve the Trojans: 55-31, 44-31, 44-32, and 45-27. Those would be basketball scores in the Big Ten.
