The Team Nobody Wants to Face In the Playoffs....The Yankees

by Jack Cobra, Cobra Brigade

Every year around this time a team is named, 'The Team Nobody Wants To Face in the Playoffs'. This distinction is usually given to a team that has been hot over the last part of the season, has a killer pitching staff or an outrageous offensive attack. Over the past few seasons teams such as the A's, Angels, and Twins have been given that mantra, but this season....it's the Yankees.

It took the Yankees awhile to get to this point, but they are now 20 games over .500 on the season and look to be a lock to get into the playoffs as the AL Wild Card team. There were times this season when it looked like Joe Torre would never figure out what to do with his bullpen or who to throw out there as his starting pitcher but it seems that the emergence of Joba Chamberlain and the emergence of staff ace Chien-Ming Wang. The offense looked inept at times, outside of Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada, but now that Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Bobby Abreu have gotten hot....things are different. The Yankees were a team that was playing tentatively earlier this season, but now they are going out there to destroy other teams and take names while doing it.

Do the Yankees have some holes in their team? Yes. Is it possible they could make a first round exit in the playoffs? Of course. Are they the team nobody wants to face during the playoffs in the American League? Absolutely.

I'd rather play the Yankees then the Indians.

I doubt the Angels will mind if they end up playing the Yankees in the first round. They're 6-3 against them this year, even with 2 of the 3 series being in NY. And then there's the '05 ALDS. And the '02 ALDS. And Escobar and Lackey match up favorably with any two starters the Yankees throw.
