I'm going to give you a rising epidemic in today's society and you try to solve the problem for me: keeping our transgender children safe. Read that again in case you missed it, "transgender children". Yeah, bet that's the last time you'll ever want to think about that. Hopefully, our transgender readers understand my confusion from this topic (I thought they were black belts?). Anyway, if you're Tim Hardaway, on your way to regaining the public's respect, this is an issue that must be addressed:
The topic was finding ways to keep transgender children safe, and someone asked for volunteers to share an idea.
Tim Hardaway was the first to raise his hand. "He was so genuine," said Martha Fugate, the director of the YES Institute, a children's advocacy group based in South Miami which hosted that discussion. "He gave the perfect answer."
"I hate those kids, I don't want them on my kids pop-warner team"
Seven months ago, that simply wouldn't have happened.
Yet there he was, in a classroom with about 40 people, mostly strangers and some of them gay, talking about the importance of education and awareness -- pointing to himself as the perfect example of how attitudes can be reshaped with a little bit of knowledge.
"I just wanted to go in and get educated, that's all. Get educated on what I said and why I said those things."
Hardaway's gotta be trippin' balls. After John Amaechi came out of the closet and admitted he was doing more than just "checking the opponents oil" on the hardcourt, Hardaway was the guy that came on national news and said "I hate gay people". Now, the man is looking for a little insight on the dudes who are down with the one-eyed monster?
I guess all athletes need a little education in the homosexual community. Like, how you react when you see a same sex couple hold hands? Can you drop a few "that's a nice tight end" jokes while watching a ball game without feeling uncomfortable with a come-on? The answer is no, sports fans. It's time to embrace the inner-gay in all of us. Let's follow Hardaway's example. Let's make a fool of ourselves and end up eating the crow hard. Let's not just tip-toe through fringe social egg-shells, let's f*ckin' stomp on 'em, piss on the destruction, and ask questions later. That's the Hard... away (pun intended, hehe!).
