by WCT, Wasting Company Time
Admittedly, I was not able to follow my usual Saturday routine of watching five games at once while drinking beer and eating wings, but I was still able to make some observations while tailgating and watching (gasp) one television. Sorry these observations are a little bit late this week.
- A full recap of the game and other festivities in Baton Rouge to come tomorrow. That deserves its own post.
- USC. Wow. What can I say? Jim Harbaugh plays mind games with USC by calling them "the greatest team in college football history" and it works. Pete Carroll should kiss Lloyd Carr for desensitizing us to huge upsets like this one.
- The old saying goes, when you see a betting line that looks too good to be true, bet the other side. For example: when you see the #5 team in the country is an underdog at an unranked team, bet on the unranked team. Those of you who followed that rule bet on Illinois and made money.
- Wisconsin lost a road game as an underdog and dropped from 5 to 15 in one poll and 5 to 19 in the other. USC lost at home as a 40 point favorite and remained in the top 10 in both polls. Reason number 3,242,379 that College Football Polls are meaningless. (Except ours! Check back here each Thursday for the brand-spanking-new Epic Carnival top 20+1 College Football poll!)
- There is another old saying (and by "old" I mean that I made it up last week) that says, when a middling SEC team is left for dead and an overrated SEC team comes calling, take the middling team. Those of you who followed this took Tennessee and made money.
- Its really sad, but I can see the how this South Florida story ends, and it won't end well. There is no excuse for allowing Florida Atlantic to hang around that long. Defense is supposed to be the Bulls' strength, and they allowed over 400 yards and 23 points Saturday. With games left against Rutgers, Cincinnati, and Louisville, I cannot see them running the table.
- Clemson football seasons are like clockwork aren't they? This has to be the last year for Tommy Bowden.
- South Carolina is now in control of its own destiny to win the SEC East and make it to the Championship Game.
- It is time for Chase Daniel to appear on the Heisman radar.
- I am actually impressed that Texas was able to keep the game against Oklahoma as close as they did, but to be honest, that game was never really in doubt. Did you know that the 'Horns have now lost four conference games in a row dating back to last year? Mix in a close call with Central Florida and you begin to see why I have been down on this team for so long.
