COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND OBSERVATIONS

by WCT, Wasting Company Time

Stop me if you've heard this before: This week was nuts!

How crazy has the year been so far? On Sportscenter Sunday morning, ESPN idiot/analyst Mark May was calling South Florida the #1 team in the nation, and its really not that outrageous a claim.

Check out the top of the standings of your favorite major conference. In most cases, there is a team that you're not accustomed to seeing in the mix, in the mix. Just a weird, weird year so far.

- Not to go all "I told you so," but last week when I said that LSU was beatable, yeah that was what I meant. They still have a decent shot to end up in the BCS title game if they win out though.

- Cal, on the other hand, should be ashamed of themselves. Losing at home to Oregon State is inexcusable. And the manner in which they lost made it even worse. How that idiot quarterback allows himself to be tackled in bounds inside of 10 seconds left with no timeouts is beyond me.

- The landscape in the Big Ten is starting to look more like normal, with Michigan and Ohio State as the the two best teams. However, the Wolverines better hope Mike Hart isn't seriously hurt. Illinois looked like crap losing to a bad Iowa team, and Wisconsin got crushed at Penn State to all but end their bid to win the conference.

- If I were an Oklahoma fan, I would be pretty pissed that they crapped the bed down the stretch at Boulder a few weeks ago, because they would be the unanimous #1 team otherwise. They looked strong beating a good Mizzou team.

- I have given up trying to figure out USC. For most of the day they looked like they were going to lose at home to a horrible Arizona team.

- How disappointing was Cincinnati's home loss to Louisville?

- That Bill Callahan contract extension just looks better and better every week! Not to beat a dead horse, but what the hell happened to that program? In consecutive weeks they have been pistol-whipped 41-6 by Missouri, and 45-14 at home to Oklahoma State.

- Can we please stop the "Colt Brennan for Heisman, Hawaii is this year's Boise State" nonsense now please? They needed overtime to be San Jose State, and Brennan was a disaster. Then again, you're bound to throw some picks in a game when you attempt 75 passes.

- Who, you ask, is alone atop the Big 12 North and the only team in either division without a conference loss? The Kansas Jayhawks.

- Who does Dennis Franchione have to rape to lose his job? There is no reason Texas A&M should be the third best team in the state.

- Remember back in September when Washington was 2-0, and everyone (myself included) was talking about what a great team they were and how great of a job Ty Willingham did turning that program around? They haven't won a football game since then.

- Teams people (myself included) gave up on too early: Auburn and Virginia Tech. Tech hosts BC next Thursday night, should be a good one.
