DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: SAM MCGUFFIE

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

The one and only Doctor Emmett Brown has joined the Epic Carnival team to provide insight on some of the great sports stars of the future. Having placated all potential problems in Hill Valley, he has turned his attention to sports. He has seen that the future has to offer and is here to give us a sneak peak. Brown is going to drop by from time to time and show us a variety of some stars you might not have heard of yet, but certainly will. These are some of the heavy hitters in high school sports today who are sure to make an impact on the college scene before long.

"There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"

Today's featured prospect is the remarkable Michigan recruit, Sam McGuffie. If you haven't seen Sam run yet, you're missing out. He might be the fastest, most athletic white dude (don't tell him that) in the history of mankind. I'm not kidding, he can fly. Don't worry, this feature is not going to be slobbering over Michigan recruits every week. He is worth the look. Simply put, you gotta see his tape.

Name: Sam McGuffie

Position: Tailback

Rivals/Scout Ranking: Rivals 4 stars and Scout 5 stars

Vitals: 6'0" (generous)/ 188 pounds (also generous) / 4.32 forty

Strengths: McGuffie has flat out blazing speed and once he gets in space he's tough to catch. He also exhibits amazing athletic ability; breaking tackles, leaping over defenders, and displaying incredible agility and shiftiness. Excuse my overexcitement, but I haven't seen a big play threat in the backfield like this since Bo Jackson.

Stats/Accolades: Greater Houston offensive player of the year and all-time Houston single season rushing record. He racked up 3,200 yards and 44 TDs in a single season.

Criticisms: The big question about McGuffie is definitely his size. He doesn't tend to run nearly as well between the tackles and is not tested as a blocker. He has to work on his strength as well as he will certainly have trouble running through bigger, faster college athletes. Additionally, McGuffie has suffered a pair of injuries in his senior season, including a high ankle sprain. Neither should be limiting going forward. Additionally, the uncertainly with regard to Lloyd Carr is always a bit of a question mark and his loyalty will be tested.

Interesting Note: Notice the offensive line play in front of McGuffie. Cy-Fair high school has a running game that looks as developed as many college teams.

I like when he presses the hurdle button like at the 3:59 mark.

I prognosticate defensive back / returner.

Michigan will have him on a major strength program. With Michael Hart graduating, I think he could see some playing time in the backfield as a true freshman. His speed and elusiveness make him a threat... even as an occasional slot receiver. If he stays at Michigan, it will be fun to watch the Maize and Blue with him getting touches.
