EPIC CARNIVAL'S NCAA FOOTBALL TOP 20+1: WEEK 7

by OMDQ, One More Dying Quail

"This is getting ridiculous."

That was the comment at the top of the first Top 20+1 email I received this week, and it could not be more true. Nothing in college football makes sense anymore. South Florida at #1? Okay. Kansas ahead of Florida? Sure. Five different teams picking up first place votes? Why not.

In the end, South Florida rode two first place votes and a number of top five listings to reach the top spot. It was an extremely close vote: three points between first and second place and only twelve points separating the top five teams. The most interesting teams, in the eyes of many, are LSU and Oklahoma, both of which suffered what are widely considered to be "fluky" losses.

Rank/School (First Place Votes)/Total Points (Last Week)

1. South Florida (2) 190 (Last Week: 4)

  • Yeah? Two quality wins. What of it? – The Grand National Championships

2. Ohio State (3) 187 (Last Week: 3)

  • I'll say this: They are the best of the country's unbeaten teams. They don't really play a tough team for at least another couple weeks. – Wasting Company Time

3. Oklahoma (2) 183 (Last Week: 6)

  • No discernable weaknesses. – Doberman on the Diamond

4. LSU (2) 179 (Last Week: 1)

  • The loss to Kentucky is going to focus the Tigers on a championship. They now know they are indeed, beatable. – More Credible

5. Boston College (1) 178 (Last Week: 5)

  • Jason Seaver is the only thing good coming out of this school. – The Grand National Championships

6. Oregon 148 (Last Week: 7)

  • At the end of the season, this team will be atop of a respectable PAC-10 conference. – More Credible

7. South Carolina 144 (Last Week: 9)

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again: Spurrier = genius. – Wasting Company Time

8. Kentucky 125 (Last Week: 17)

  • Woodson right back into the favorite chair for the Heisman...he can put a stamp on it w/a "W" over the Gators this weekend. – The Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

9. Arizona State 120 (Last Week: 10)

  • Dennis Erickson IS a good college coach. Really. You shouldn't be surprised. – The Grand National Championships

10. California 115 (Last Week: 2)

  • Note to Berkeley: Your back-ups are dumb. – More Credible

11. Virginia Tech 113 (Last Week: 12)

  • Getting better and better each week. VT vs. BC should be a good one. – Wasting Company Time

12. Kansas 109 (Last Week: 19)

  • How can you not get behind a team who's coach looks like he ate Ralph Friedgen? – Wasting Company Time

13. Florida 83 (Last Week: 11)

  • They beat Kentucky and it all goes back all higgledy diggledy. – The Grand National Championships
14. West Virginia 78 (Last Week: 14)
  • As soon as they play somebody tough and look good, I'll move them up. Until then, I'll continue to say this team has lost to the only decent team they have played. – Wasting Company Time
15. USC 74 (Last Week: 15)
  • Struggled to beat Washington, lost to Stanford at home, struggled to beat Arizona at home. Try recruiting players at positions other than running back. – Doberman on the Diamond
16. Missouri 66 (Last Week: 8)
  • Too much offense. Not enough defense. – More Credible
17. Auburn 49 (Last Week: Unranked)
  • Really? They're still around. – The Ghosts of Wayne Fontes
18. Hawaii 44 (Last Week: 18)
  • Say what you will, but they aren't losing this season. – The Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

19. Georgia 23 (Last Week: Unranked)

  • Just not enough SEC teams in the ranks. – The Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

T-20. Cincinnati 20 (Last Week: 13)

  • Not life-changing anymore I guess. – The Grand National Championships

T-20. Texas Tech 20 (Last Week: Unranked)

  • Face Mizzou this week. Final score: 91-87. – Doberman on the Diamond
PLUS ONE. Tennessee 18 (Last Week: Unranked)
  • Good 'ole rocky top. – The Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

Dropped Out: Illinois (#16), Florida State (#20), Wisconsin (PLUS ONE)
