HEISMAN WATCH: WINNER BY DEFAULT?

by Jacob, Vegas Watch

A weekly look at the top Heisman contenders, as voted on by the EC writers.

1. Andre Woodson (7) 35
Kentucky (6-1) QB
156/245 (63.7%), 1786 yds, 21 TDs, 4 INTs
Previous rank: 1

Current odds on Sportsbetting.com: 3:1

When we did this three weeks ago, Kentucky, Florida and USC were all undefeated, and thus their QBs were all in the top four. All those teams have since lost, and the only undefeated top 10 teams left are Ohio State, South Florida and BC. Those first two teams don't have anyone who has gotten enough national attention to enter the race (yet), while BC's quarterback valuted up to #2 (see below).

Meanwhile, Woodson continues to put up huge numbers. He's thrown for at least 218 yards in every game, and 250+ in five of seven. His TD-INT stats aren't as impressive as they were a few weeks ago (10 TD, 4 INT over his last three games), but that's balanced out by last week's big win over LSU. Kentucky hosts Florida this weekend, which means more national exposure for Woodson.

2. Matt Ryan (1) 15
Boston College (7-0) QB
192/304 (63.2%), 2184 yds, 17 TDs, 6 INTs
Previous rank: 8

Current odds on Sportsbetting.com: 4:1

Both BC's ranking and Matt Ryan's Heisman chances have benefited from everybody else losing. Ryan has racked up some big numbers in the last two weeks (603 yds, 6 TD, 1 INT), but it's been against Bowling Green and Notre Dame. Ryan and BC will finally be challenged next Thursday, when they visit Virginia Tech.

3. Tim Tebow (1) 10
Florida (4-2) QB
97/148 (65.5%), 1455 yds, 13 TDs, 3 INTs; 105 carries, 500 yds, 9 TDs
Previous rank: 2

Current odds on Sportsbetting.com: 10:1

Tebow struggled against LSU, going 12/26 with 2 TDs and an INT. Even with two losses, Tebow and the Gators still have a chance to make themselves heard, with big road games against Kentucky, Georgia, and South Carolina over the next month.

4. Dennis Dixon 9
Oregon (5-1) QB
118/168 (70.2%), 1525 yds, 15 TDs, 2 INTs; 63 carries, 324 yds, 6 TDs
Previous rank: 6

Current odds on Sportsbetting.com: 15:1

Dixon threw a couple picks in Oregon's loss to Cal. Without those two throws, Oregon is likely undefeated, and Dixon is at the top of this list, as the rest of his numbers are ridiculous.

Others receiving votes: Mike Hart 8, Brian Brohm 1, Darren McFadden 1, Troy Nolan 1, Sam Bradford 1
