PETER KING BEATS A DEAD HORSE

Every Friday around noon Peter King calls into WEEI and talks with the Dale and Holley show. For those of you living outside Massachusetts the D&H show is sandwiched between two insufferable conservatives talking sh*t about the state and it's governor, and four insufferable fat guys talking out of both sides of their asses about the Patriots and Red Sox. In other words it's the only thing on EEI that a normal person can listen to without contemplating suicide five times an hour. So King is on the station right now talking about - what else - CameraGate. Don't be fooled into thinking that it was one passing remark, Peter King isn't talking about anything other then CameraGate and it's Week 6 of the NFL season.

What does King want? I mean he obviously is not letting this thing with Belichick go. He's obviously going around to everyone who will talk to him about what the Patriots did and how awful Roger Goodell has handled the situation. Even today Wade Phillips had to come out and deny something that Peter King reported he said about the whole situation. When Dale Arnold asked King point blank what he wanted the response was classic "I want to hear from Belichick."

What sort of stupid ass remark is that? What good would come out of Belichick talking to Peter King about why he had someone videotape the Jets sideline? At what point does Peter King sit back and realize that this is the stupidest crusade any reporter has ever gone on? Does he really think that some smoking gun will appear and Belichick will admit that they cheated in the Super Bowl and then hand the rings over to the Rams/Eagles/Panthers? Does he think that suddenly it will be revealed that the Patriots players had nothing to do with why they won and instead it was the fact that defensive coordinators never change their signals (which is false) and the Patriots staff is just so smart that during a 25 second clock they can see the other teams signals, remember what they mean, decipher them and then send the new play designed specifically to stop that play into the defense?

The fact of the matter is that Bill Belichick got caught doing something that probably more coaches then will ever admit were doing. He gave his cookie cutter statement about not knowing the rules (which was a lie) and then moved on. Everyone nodded their heads and agreed that this was Belichick's arrogance. Players and coaches with an axe to grind came out and told everyone that this was why the Patriots have been so unstoppable, while coaches who either weren't involved or don't have a personal negative history with Belichick came out and said this was the most overblown thing in history.

But Peter King wasn't satisfied. Greg Easterbrook thinks that this situation was worse then Watergate, and Chris Colinsworth wants the Patriots to forfeit a playoff game (a scenario so asinine that I think Colinsworth should have lost his job over it). Simply put King wants there to be something else - he wants there to be more because in his mind there should be, there must be, there has to be - but there isn't. The video tapes were all turned over, they were destroyed and the league was ready to move on. The only person not willing to move on is King because he feels like a lover scorned. He has been sucking at the bosom of Bill Belichick since day one and he feels betrayed so he is going to do everything within his power to find a story that doesn't exist so that he can get back him.

To put this into a real life scenario (hold on I'm putting my Bill Simmons hat for a minute): Say you're dating a girl who you are absolutely head over heels in love with, you guys spend all this great time together and you think you might have found the one. But maybe she goes to France for a semester abroad and when she comes back she's different - she keeps talking about how she met some great guys in France and maybe the two of you should take a break. You feel betrayed and hurt because while she was gone you spent the semester knitting socks for her so she would know how much you missed her - so the first chance you get you videotape yourself having anal sex with her best friend/sister and post it on the Internet. That's what Peter King is trying to do - have anal sex with Bill Belichick's best friend. He's a lover scorned and he can't put this situation behind himself - which is sad because he actually was one of the few writers that was tolerable. Not so much anymore.
