THROWING KNIVES: FAVRE GOES DEEP

by BD, Epic Carnival

Brett Favre did it again last night as he aired one out on the first play of OT and Greg Jennings took it to the house. Making Dre' Bly look as overrated as he is. The Pack improved to 6-1, but are they a legitimate NFC contender? The MLB Managerial carousel started spinning at an impressive clip as Girardi and Torre have apparently been offered jobs. Joe didn't wait long did he? The hot stove cast it's first spark as well as the Tigers added Shortstop Edgar Renteria, but did they give up too much? Decided to shift the NBA Preview to it's own post, so it's just the usual stuff here. Enjoy Jaime Paetz, as I'm sure like me, this is the first you've heard of her.

Favre and Co. Improve to 6-1
In the process he and his young receivers torched both Dre' Bly and Champ Bailey each deep once. In the first instance James Jones ran right on by Bailey for the catch and did the rest himself. Ending with 6 points 79 yards later. The other instance I mentioned above, Greg Jennings beat Dre' Bly easily for the game-winning score on the first play of overtime. The Pack move to 6-1 and remain a game ahead of the surprising Lions. But, are they a real contender for the NFC crown? My initial thought is no. Not unless Ryan Grant can do what he did last night, every night. That is, run the football. As they've exhausted all of their other options and it's not working. Without a running game Green Bay isn't going anywhere. With a running game? They're a contender as they've got a solid, albeit young defense, and of course Favre.

Joe Torre To Manage Dodgers
If this happens its a great move for the Dodgers. Torre should still be in New York, but with a spoiled fan base and ownership it's hardly surprising he's out. Can he fix the many chemistry issues, and quiet the whining in the Dodgers club house? Nothings a guarantee, but if he can't do it I don't know who can. Bonus, Don Mattingly is expected to be his bench coach.

Girardi Offered Yankees Job
The Yanks chose to go with the proven commodity, rather than the unproven Mattingly. You can't really blame them, but how will Girardi's style work with the overpaid, veteran laced, Yankees? It could backfire, but at the very least he's a great choice as the Yankees try to bring in more youth. Interestingly, the Dodgers wanted Girardi, but they'll have to "settle" for Torre.

Tigers Get Renteria for Jurrjens and Hernandez
It'll be a few years before we find out who won this deal, but if Renteria can't maintain last year numbers (.332/12/57) it'll be a disappointment for Detroit. Jurrjens looked good in 7 starts at the end of last season and was arguably Detroit's best started down the stretch. Hernandez projects as a future star-caliber player who can hit for power and absolutely destroy the base paths. He was expendable in Detroit though as Cameron Maybin is considered the better prospect of the two. For me, I'd have tried to get it done with just Hernandez and maybe Jordan Tata as I was expecting Jurrjens to be an integral part of the rotation this season is Kenny Rogers doesn't stay.

Weekend Box Office Top 5
1. Saw 4 - I'll see this, but they need to stop with the series already.
2. Dan In Real Life - I'm a Carrel fan, but this looks like a family flick, not my favorite kind.
3. 30 Days of Night - They're hyping this one well and it seems worth a look.
4. The Gameplan - Again, people are still seeing this?
5. Why Did I get Married? - I got nothin'

Television
Heroes finally gave us our first look at this seasons central conflict. The New York City evacuation. While I'm not terribly pleased to once again have the Heroes rally to save New York, but it makes me wonder if they'll be saving New York every year. Peter got himself to Montreal and found a note from Adam, who I have a feeling isn't one of the good guys. Nathan and Co. had better hope they can get to Peter before Adam does. Monica got the lowdown from Suresh and was almost injected with a power removing (and potentially deadly) shot. Suresh though, manned up and refused to administer the shot throwing a stool into the the bulk of shots. Very uncharacteristic, but still a nice touch. Though it seems to have lead to his new partner Nikki, who "owes the company," and will apparently be keeping an eye on Mohinder. The exchange between Syler and Alajandro was amusing as he plays the twins against each other while awaiting the return of his powers. The Claire/West cheerleader bit was a little stupid and unnecessary to me. Though, I cannot for the life of me imagine being in the shoes of the girl they tricked. Then you have the Hiro/Kensei situation in which Hiro goes against all that he believes in by kissing Yaeko. Thus putting himself, Yaeko and her father in a tough spot. It has me wondering where this'll end up. Hiro will come out on top of course, but at what cost? As far as the paints go, I wouldn't really make any of them out besides the one with HRG we've seen and another that looked like Hiro fighting a samurai (Kensei?). All in all a good episode as it gave us our first glance of the central plot.

Californcation's first season came to a close last night in amusing fashion, as you'd expect. Hank dodged a major bullet when Mia used her better judgment and did not admit to a sexual encounter with Hank. Charlie and Marcy reconciled, quickly in fact, as he was inside her about 5 minutes after they initially talked. The most interesting part of this episode was that the wedding happened and Hank didn't interrupt it. Mia did, of course, but Hank helped quiet her down. The true kicker though? The ending seen Karen running out on Bill and jumping into Hank's back seat as he and Becca were leaving. The family's back together, but I have a feeling next season it's not going to be all smiles and kisses, don't you?
