COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND OBSERVATIONS

by WCT, The Ship of Fools

The games in November are the games you remember.

I don't know who said this originally, but it sounds profound (and it rhymes!) so I'm using it.

- Boston College cannot lose that game at home. Florida State is, without question, the worst coached team I have seen in D-1A, and BC had them in Chestnut Hill. BC had aspirations of playing for the BCS title and they were playing against a team that lost to Wake Forest and changes quarterbacks every five minutes. There is no excuse for that loss.

- One more note on this game: I'm pretty sure that Matt Ryan can kiss the Heisman good-bye after that performance. "Matty Ice," as he is known in Boston, threw three interceptions including a back-breaking pick-six in the final seconds. That, coupled with his struggles for 95% of the Virginia Tech game, should drop him from contention.

- As expected, Ohio State got its test, as they were down 17-10 in the second half before ending the game with 28 unanswered points. If you want to get a jump on the 2008 Heisman race you should check out Buckeye RB Chris Wells. The sophomore bruiser is putting together quite a resume.

- I have no earthly idea what Charlie Weis is thinking anymore. I give up. First he completely mismanages his team's quarterback situation, causing Demetrius Jones to transfer. Then he turns Notre Dame into the bowl subdivision's worst and least productive offense. This past Saturday against Navy has to be the last straw. With less than a minute to play in a tie game, Weis leaves his offense on the field on 4th and 8 rather than attempt a 41-yard go-ahead field goal. Of course, the 4th down was unsuccessful, of course the game went into overtime and of course Notre Dame lost.

- With each passing week, UCLA (tied for 2nd in the Pac-10, the only team to lose to Notre Dame this season) looks worse and worse.

- When I fill out my blogpoll ballot this week, my #1 will be the Oregon Ducks. They made a statement by beating Arizona State convincingly on Saturday. With Arizona, UCLA, and Oregon State remaining, the Ducks have the easiest path to the title game of the BCS top 3.

- What fanbase to you pity more? Oklahoma State fans? Or Michigan State fans? Both are second-fiddles in their own state, in the midst of disappointing seasons, and both snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday. The Cowboys allowed twenty-four fourth quarter points to lose to Texas 38-35, the Spartans gave up two touchdowns in the last seven minutes to blow a 10-point fourth quarter lead and lose 28-24.

- Beating up on Bill Callahan and Nebraska has become far too easy, so I will not go off on a rant about the fact that their "blackshirt" defense allowed SEVENTY-SIX POINTS to Kansas on Saturday.

- Good won over evil at least once this weekend (not on Sunday of course) as Nick Saban(or as Dan LeBatard calls him, "O-Saban Bin-Lyin'") lost to his former team LSU in Tuscaloosa. Losing a game is one thing, but 'Bama did everything humanly possible to give that game to LSU.

- Who does Chase Daniel have to sleep with to get some Heisman love? The guy is quarterbacking a 9-1 team and just torched Colorado for 421 yards and five TDs.

- Nice knowing you, South Florida. It was a cute story for a while, but the Bulls have now gone from #2 (with some idiots even voting them #1) to unranked in just a matter of weeks.

Did you know that the Oregon Ducks mascot was patterned after Donald Duck? I learned that from Jenn Sterger.
