It's week 14 sports fans. Championship Week. But more on that tomorrow...
Last week's poll finally, finally had a unanimous #1 team. Naturally, that team (LSU) proceeded to go out and lose its next game.
Some speculated that the loss was because Coach Les Miles was distracted by the Michigan job officially opening up. Others thought that Darren McFadden knew this was his last shot to showcase himself for the Heisman, and that carried the Hogs to victory. I prefer to think it was the pressure of playing with the "Epic Carnival unanimous #1" tag. Don't kid yourself, college student-athletes everywhere read this blog religiously. They know that once EC votes you #1, you have a giant bulls-eye on your back. Suddenly, you're getting everyone's best shot and have to bring it every single week.
This week, we have an almost-unanimous #1, with yours truly casting the lone #1 vote for the Mountaineers. Be warned, Missouri Tigers, uneasy lies the head that wears the Epic Carnival crown.
Rank - Team - Points - Previous Rank - Commentary
1 – Missouri (5) - 125 - 3 - What's this, the 13th team to be #1 this year? (DCScrap)
2 – West Virginia (1) - 118 - 4 - UConn is still trying to figure out what hit them on Saturday. (WCT)
3 – Georgia - 109 - 5 - Are they gonna get screwed by the BCS? Yes. (Andrew)
4 – Ohio State - 106 - 6 - I wouldn't like their chances against WVU or Mizzou. They should just be happy to go to Pasadena. (WCT)
5 – LSU - 99 - 1 - Last week I asked how they would play with the Les Miles distractions. Well, I got my answer - "poorly." (WCT)
6 – Oklahoma - 92 - 8 - A day late and a dollar short if Missouri chokes and WV takes an easy one against Pitt. (Mike)
7 – Virginia Tech - 86 - 9 - Two QB system looks like it can work...for now (Mike)
8 – Kansas - 84 - 2 - It would be nice if they had a better win than just A&M. (Simon)
9 – Florida - 80 - 10 - Tebow should win the Heisman, but don't be impressed by a home win over Florida State. The best team UF has beaten this year is Tennessee. (WCT)
10 – USC - 71 - 12 - They destroyed Arizona St...but then again who really thought ASU was any good to begin with? (Mike)
11 – Illinois - 58 - 15 - Too little too late. The Illini are going to just miss a BCS bowl, unless OSU goes to the title game. (WCT)
12 – Boston College - 55 - I think they lose the re-match with VT on Saturday (WCT)
13 – Tennessee - 54 - 18 - Really deserved to lose last week. (Andrew)
14 – Hawaii - 47 - 14 - Undefeated, but still not Boise State 2006. (DCScrap)
15 – Clemson - 33 - 21 - They (might have) saved Tommy Bowden's job (again) with a last-second FG. (WCT)
16 – Arizona State - 31 - 7 - This is about where they belong. They were a fraudulent top 10 team. (WCT)
17 – Cincinnati - 19 - NR - That close loss vs. WVU looks pretty good now. (WCT)
18 – Texas - 18 - 13 - Even I expected them to beat lame-duck Franchione. (WCT)
19 – Auburn - 17 - NR - Finished off Saban's mediocre first season. (Simon)
20 – Oregon - 17 - 11 - Oh, what could have been. (WCT)
Plus One – South Florida - 15 - NR - Still the only team in the country to knock off the Mountaineers. (Simon)
