A weekly look at the top Heisman contenders, as voted on by the EC writers.
1. Tim Tebow (8) 49
Florida (8-3) QB
198/289 (68.5%), 2870 yds, 26 TDs, 6 INTs; 181 carries, 749 yds, 20 TDs
Previous rank: 2
Current SportsBetting.com odds: 1:4
Well, I was wrong. With Dixon out for the year, Tebow is now the prohibitive favorite. The combination of Dixon's injury(/Oregon's loss) and his seven touchdown performance allowed him to finally reach the top spot.
Tebow's numbers are pretty overwhelming, but the Gators are still only ranked 12th in the AP poll. Which leaves the door slightly open for...2. Chase Daniel (2) 24
Missouri (10-1) QB
309/446 (69.3%), 3590 yds, 30 TDs, 9 INTs
Previous rank: T5
Current SportsBetting.com odds: 5:2
3. Todd Reesing (1) 9
Kansas (11-0) QB
228/360 (63.3%), 2910 yds, 30 TDs, 4 INTs
Previous rank: N/A
Current Sportsbetting.com odds: N/A
If one of these guys has a huge game in a winning effort on Saturday, and vaults his team into the BCS title game, then they might have a shot of overtaking Tebow. Both of these guys have come on late- Reesing has thrown for 13 TDs in his last three games (in which Kansas has scored an average of 55 points), while Daniel has thrown 12.
Nobody else got a significant amount of votes, as the rest were incredibly scattered. SportsBetting has Pat White and Darren McFadden as the next most likely candidates; they are both at 5:1. White (1391 pass yds, 11 pass TDs, 958 rush yds, 12 rush TDs) seems like he has a shot, if West Virginia can beat UConn and Pitt convincingly, have some things fall their way, and advance to the title game. McFadden (272 carries, 1519 yards, 12 TDs) would need a huge game against #1 LSU on CBS on Friday afternoon.

Forget the Heisman. Chase Daniel needs to win the Davey O'Brien award. The O'Brien Award actually stands for something. It factors in both on and off-field criteria. The Heisman is too glamorous for its own good.
