SOME COLLEGE FOOTBALL STATS/FACTS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN

by Kyle Smith, Doberman On The Diamond

This college football season has been one of the most nonsensical in recent memory. Up is down, left is right, cats and dogs are living harmoniously, and traditional basketball powers like Kansas and UConn are ranked higher in the BCS standings than traditional football schools like Texas, USC and Alabama. Within that theme, let's take a gander at some statistics or facts that display the craziness.

- Notre Dame is the only team yet to amass 2,000 total offensive yards. They are dead last in that category, and one of only two teams in all of college football (along w/ Fla. International) not to average at least 270 yards per game. The domers gain an average of 208.44 offensive yards per contest.

- San Jose St. and Duke have each played 9 games, yet have made only 2 field goals all season, the lowest in the NCAA.

- Syracuse has returned 7 punts ... for 14 yards.

- Minnesota's defense has given up 887 more yards than any other team in the NCAA.

- Florida St. head coach Bobby Bowden is 15-0 vs. Virginia Tech. The two schools play this weekend.

- UAB and Fla. International have also played 9 games, and have scored just 2 rushing touchdowns, the lowest in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech has but 2 passing TD's.

- Passes thrown by Miami (Fla.) QB's have been intercepted 7.4% of the time.

- Combined, Rice and Minnesota are giving up more than 4 passing touchdown for every 1 pass they intercept.

- Fresno State has intercepted 1 pass all season.

- N.C. State allows just 2.67 yards per punt return. Memphis allows over 20.

- Minnesota and Syracuse each have amassed 7 sacks on defense. 20 individual players have more.
