If you are old like me (in the blogger world I am ancient) you remember the good old days when toys were made of metal and had sharp edges and you could actually choke on the parts. Good times. One of the best/worst toys of those dark ages was a group of toys called Super Jock Sports Games. They consisted of plastic, semi-working toys created to simulate players in certain sports. They had a football kicker, a hockey slapshot guy, a swivel-hipped baseball batter, and a basketball set-shooter. All of them worked on the concept that you pounded on the dude's noggin and he did his thing. The football guy and basketball guy were pretty sweet. They almost functioned like they were supposed to function. The hockey guy and the baseball guy pretty much blew ass. Try being a 10-year old and timing the baseball guy's hip-swivel. For overall fun and considering this was pre-video game domination, they were all pretty cool. One problem though was that all that slamming on the guy's dome eventually resulted in him breaking. Then all you had was a guy with no neck whose leg swung around limply. Kind of like Tim Krumrie in Super Bowl XXIII. I think between me and my best friend we went through about six of those Super Toes trying to kick 100 yard field goals.
What possesses me to bring this up? The other day I was watching some kids channel on TV and there was an advertisement for a toy called "Head Bangers Football," billed as the "Ultimate Field Goal Kicking Game." Ultimate indeed. Original, not so much. Needless to say I was brought back to my youth and all the memories of playing with the Super Jocks characters.
After reading the Head Banger's product description, this is the EXACT same thing as the old Super Jocks toys. They also have a hockey guy and a soccer guy. How they missed out on the basketball guy is beyond me. Nothing like trying a shot from across the kitchen, over the dining room table, for pure kid entertainment.
Why am I posting about this? No idea, other than I thought it was neat that kids can play the same stupid game I did. And that's enough for me.
Frankly, I am amazed that there is no video of someone "kicking" a "record-setting" field goal on the YouTubes anywhere.
So, did anyone else out there play with the Super Jocks toys? Did you bust them up too? Holler.
