News broke yesterday that Roddy White and a host of other Atlanta Falcons were suspended for supporting Michael Vick with t-shirts and posters.
Ok, so maybe DeAngelo Hall went too far with the poster on the sideline but in DeAngelo's defense, he was never considered the sharpest tool in the box as a kid.
But this made me think.
Were there other times in NFL history where players wore t-shirts underneath their jersey to support a cause and the NFL just didn't catch wind of it?
5. After getting caught several times with marijuana, the Dolphins' Ricky Williams was finally suspended from the NFL for one year. Many of his Dolphin teammates, while Pot Smokers themselves, didnt want to encourage kids to smoke weed. So under their jerseys that week, they had a PSA.
4. Frustrated that he was one of the few Cincinnati Bengals that could stay out of the trouble, Carson Palmer was plain fed up with his team of fugitives. He wanted to send a clear message to his other teammates that going to jail wasnt a pretty sight.
3. Earlier this year, Travis Henry was said to have fathered nine kids from nine different women. And even though he was a millionaire, he was having trouble making child support payments. In dire need and to avoid jail time, he borrowed 9,800 dollars from his former team, the Tennessee Titans. Several players came to Henry's defense and said, "Nine players from nine different women wasnt even possible". That Sunday, they also protested with t-shirts.
3. In 2003, after attending a Colorado/CSU game, Pittsburgh Steeler Joey Porter was shot outside a bar. The wound proved to be non-lethal as he was shot in the left butt cheek. Upon his return to the team, several Steelers were lighthearted about the situation and snuck a t-shirt underneath Porter's jersey without him knowing.
1. In November of 1999, word spread that Carolina Panther Rae Carruth had killed his wife. After posting bond, Rae pulled an OJ and took off. He was eventually captured outside a motel in the trunk of a friends car. Several of his teammates were scared they would be implicated in his run from the law. Unbeknowst to many in the stands that week, several Carolina Panther players wore t-shirts in protest.
