DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: DARRELL SCOTT

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

The one and only Doctor Emmett Brown has joined the Epic Carnival team to provide insight on some of the great sports stars of the future. Having placated all potential problems in Hill Valley, he has turned his attention to sports. He has seen that the future has to offer and is here to give us a sneak peak. Brown is going to drop by from time to time and show us a variety of some stars you might not have heard of yet, but certainly will. These are some of the heavy hitters in high school sports today who are sure to make an impact on the college scene before long.

"There's that word again; 'heavy.' Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"

With Terrelle Pryor gobbling up all the media attention in past few weeks, it seems folks have started to forget about Darrell Scott. If Terrelle is Vince Young, Darrell is LaDanian Tomlinson. This kid has recruiters from coast to coast both drooling and wishing upon their lucky stars. He's the real deal and a lock to make a huge impact from day one (particularly if he chooses the horrible Buffaloes). In a chat with Rivals.com message board users, Scott rehashed his trip to Texas and enforced that they are definitely in the top 3, along with Colorado and LSU. The February 6th signing day is narrowly approaching, so stay tuned to see who hits the lucky jackpot.

Strengths: Where do we begin? He is blazingly fast with great size and power. Scott will beat you with his speed or he'll knock you on your ass. He is the protege of the complete running back - at least as close as you can get for an 18 year-old. He is big and fast enough to go between the tackles, but quick and fast to break the big play. For his size, perhaps the most impressive skill is his shake n' bake. He's quite quick laterally and turns against the grain well. Overall, Scott is really a rare combination of speed and power - not quite Purple Jesus rare, but not too far off.

Stats/Accolades: Is 2,433 yards and 34 touchdowns in a senior season good? It's not good enough? Fine, how about 3,194 yards and 45 touchdowns in his junior season? Darrell Scott is the unanimous top rated running back in the 2008 class and won California junior of the year last year.

Criticisms: I didn't see much with my expert eyes, but more refined professionals have mentioned his hands on numerous occasions. Bad hands could definitely hurt his prospects, not so much in college, but more so when he starts thinking NFL. Pass catching runners are a must these days in the pros. I suspect it's due to the fact that most coaches play fantasy football with reception points. That should sum it up right there: if I'm resorting to crummy fantasy football jokes in the criticisms section, you know they don't really exist.

Interesting Factoid: This is my favorite Question/Answer combo from the Rivals chat.

User: Do you prefer to shake somebody in the open field, stiff arm them, or just run them over?

Scott: I'd prefer a shake/stiff arm combo if I had to choose but whatever it takes.
