by WCT, The Ship of Fools
“Calling You Out!” is a periodic segment where WCT takes people to task for irresponsible journalism, foolhardy activities, or just general douchebaggery. Nothing is sacred, no one is spared, watch your ass mister! You could be next!
This time, we take down a 5 that thinks she is a 9
Granted, I'm stealing this analogy from ESPN's Erik Kuselias, but it fits, so I'm using it.
There is nothing wrong with the chick at the bar who is a 5. However, there is nothing worse than the chick at the bar who is a 5, and thinks she is a 9. Thats just annoying. LSU Basketball has officially become that chick.
On Friday, the Tigers fired head coach John Brady after nearly 11 full seasons at the helm. Brady had amassed 192 wins as head coach, and had won two SEC titles, taken the Tigers to four NCAA tournaments, one sweet 16 appearance (2000), and one Final Four (2006).
To be fair, the Tigers were in the middle of an 8-13 year, and they were last in the SEC, but lets call a spade a spade here: This is LSU. No offense to any Tiger basketball fans out there, but this is not UCLA, this is not Kansas, this is not a program that should be expecting to go to the Final Four every year. In the five years before Brady was hired, the Tigers made exacly one NCAA tournament appearance, and in the 11 seasons that preceded Brady's 11 season tenure, LSU won only one SEC title and made no Final Fours. And that was with players like Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf), Stanley Roberts, and Shaquille O'Neal!
John Brady wasn't doing anything to make anyone forget about John Wooden, but to fire him two-thirds of the way through the season seems unfair. Especially when you consider the fact that he was still recovering from losing Tyrus Thomas and Glenn "Big Baby" Davis in consecutive years. The '07-'08 Tigers only have one senior on their roster for crying out loud! Are they not allowed a rebuilding year?
LSU needs to get over themselves. They are a 5, but somehow are under the impression that they are a 9. The truth is they are a second or third tier basketball program, and they should have been happy to have a coach that would occasionally win conference titles and take them to National Semifinals.
