GET TO CAPE COD FOR SOME BASEBALL

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

Everyone here knows that I run The College Baseball Blog and enjoy going to College Baseball games throughout the year. One of the best deals in the nation is going to the Cape Cod Baseball League which is the premier home for the best college baseball players in the country. The admission charge is absolutely nothing and the food at the games is very reasonable.

The CCBL has become the summer home for the best players in the nation. The latest count was 212 former CCBL members played at least one game in MLB last season. The Cape League is becoming the proving ground as scouts from around the nation flock to the league since they use wood bats and every pitcher in the league is throwing 90+ MPH and has two plus pitches which means they are expected to be draft picks once they become draft eligible.

MLB recently has decided to pressure the CCBL to pay a $100,000 fee to use the nicknames of MLB teams down the Cape. Some of the teams are called the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, Chatham A's, etc. MLB also wants the Cape League to use the merchandising vendor Majestic for all the Cape League merchandise which is sold at the games. Local vendors down on Cape Cod currently make all the merchandise which keeps many of these small towns alive throughout the year as this league has become big business for many of the communities. The Cape Cod Times wrote an excellent piece on this which is available here.
