DO YOU TURN PRO?

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

Everyone knows that I run one of the top College Baseball sites on the Internet but I have recognized that there are many high school age kids that are being drafted by MLB squads. Do you hear the outcry from the general media when these kids are guaranteed a few million dollars to sign a contract with a MLB squad?

We are talking the same age of the potential draftees as the ones in the NBA a few years ago so is this a racial issue as many of the kids drafted in the MLB draft are Caucasian and the ones that were drafted in the NBA are African-American?

Do you think we should allow High School kids to be eligible for the MLB Draft or should they have to attend college for three years and then become eligible for the draft? I know if I was in High School and someone offered me a million dollars to go play professional baseball that I would have jumped on it as I can always head back to college after my playing days were over.

It's really impossible to compare the world of professional baseball to the world of professional basketball. When an 18 year old kid is drafted by a MLB club he is sent to rookie ball in small town America. Sure he has a couple of millions of dollars in his bank account, but thats a long way from the circus of NBA. When a player does make it to the show he has usually spent at least 2 years in the minors, with little to no endorsements, and without the pressures of TV cameras and reporters in his face 24/7. Maybe if the NBA followed in the footsteps of MLB and the NHL and developed a minor league system that let these kids develop as both athletes and human beings this wouldn't be an issue.
I know the NBA has a development league, but you can hardly call that a minor league system. I guess in the end it doesn't matter anyway, the NBA is a dead league. Has been for a long time. If you don't believe me know check back in after this whole Tim Donaghy thing runs it's course.
