O's - YANKS MEMORABLE HOME RUN DERBY GAME

by Mac G, Mac G's World

Technically last night's game between the Yanks/Orioles is just 1 out of 162 but it sure was a crazy, wild memorable one.

Events of the game included:

  • Derek Jeter having an miserable outing (detailed description later)
It caused a teary eyed Orioles manager Dave Trembley to remark:
"This is the best game I've ever been a part of to win," Trembley said of his team's effort. "I've never seen anything like that. That's a real credit to our team. That's probably the biggest understatement I can say. That's just incredible."
Here are the video highlights:

Captain Jeter had one of the worst games that I have seen from him in a long, long time. His costly mistakes did not directly cost his team a victory but they severely limited the Yankees' chances.

Jeter was on 2nd with 2 outs and the Orioles put in a new reliever to face Arod. Orioles 3B calls a fake timeout, Jeter freezes, and the Orioles pick him off second to end the rally with Arod never seeing one pitch.

Top 9, score tied at 8, Johnny Damon leads off the inning by reaching first. Jeter is unable to bunt him over and then strikes out.

Top 11, bases loaded, no out, Jeter on 2nd base, Arod hits a line drive ground ball to Brian Roberts, who tosses it home and the catcher turns a double play by throwing to 3rd to beat Jeter for the force out. Jeter should have beat the throw easily.

Bottom 11, Orioles down 9-8, 1 out, Melvin Mora on 1st base, Aubrey Huff lines one into the gap, Jeter throws the relay home instead of holding it to prevent Huff from advancing to third base. 2 walks and a hit later, ball game for the Orioles.

I am sure Jeter will rebound in Wednesday night's game, the Yanks will eventually heat up this summer to contend and the Orioles will continue to scrap around 500.

However, Orioles fans can still revel in this improbable victory by enjoying the same type of cocktails Orioles announcer Gary Thorne is pounding during his broadcasts, Harray Caray/Doyle style.
