CALLING YOU OUT! THE NEW YORK METS

by WCT, The Ship of Fools

“Calling You Out!” is a periodic segment where WCT takes people to task for irresponsible journalism, foolhardy activities, or just general douchebaggery. Nothing is sacred, no one is spared, watch your ass mister! You could be next!

If you have been paying attention, you had to see this coming...

I guess Omar isn't a reader.

I was all ready to put together a post talking about how stupid the USGA is to have an 18-hole (or in this case, 19-hole) playoff decide the U.S. Open (can you imagine a 60-minute overtime period to decide a football game? Or 9 extra innings when a baseball game is tied?) and then, in the middle of the night, this happened.

For a second, let's ignore the fact that they fired Willie after saying that his job was on the line in the Texas series, then watching him win 2 out of 3 in said series.

Let's ignore the fact that the team has won 4 of 6, with the two losses being a blown save by Wagner, and a 1-run game they almost came back and won. Let's ignore the fact that the three losses that preceded that 6 game span were, blown save, blown save, blown save.

Let's ignore the fact that they replaced him with Jerry Freaking Manuel, his bench coach, the guy who ostensibly is his advisor on all managerial decisions, and has a worse career winning percentage as a manager than he does.

Let's instead focus on the fact that they let him twist in the wind since Memorial Day (they are 11-9 since, but with a decent bullpen, could easily be 15-5 in that span) then made him fly all the way across the country to Anaheim, then whacked him at the hotel, in the middle of the night, after a win. Nice.

I agree with your assessment of the clowns in the Mets organization. However, I LOVE the 18 hole playoff in the U.S. Open. I think it's great that it's unique in sports, and as a fan, it was riveting, dramatic theater yesterday. The U.S. Open is supposed to be grueling. It's supposed to be about outlasting your opponents. Waiting one more day for it's conclusion only heightens anticipation and adds to the drama in my mind. I love the format, and I can only hope the USGA doesn't bend to crusty curmudgeons like WCT who want to disregard tradition in favor of instant gratification.

As they so eloquently put it on PTI yesterday, "if you're a lawyer arguing against an 18 hole playoff, today (yesterday) is about the worst time in the world to make that argument." Yes, yesterday was riveting, but in 18-hole playoffs, that was the exception not the rule. Normally one guy gets out to a huge stroke lead and the last 6-7 holes are a formality. In my opinion, a 3-hole match play playoff would be perfect. And if you MUST do an 18 hole playoff, you gotta do it match play.
