UFC President Dana White is a dick in my books.
He's one of those guys who loves his role and the publicity that come with it more than anything else in the world. Just look at the whole Tito Ortiz thing.
Anyone with an ounce of class keeps his yap shut and handles his business silently, letting Tito look like the whiny, over the hill competitor that he is.
That being said, White was dead right in his comments about Elite XC and CBS giving Kimbo Slice the golden boy treatment on their debut show. CBS almost fell into the one and done MMA business...
I'm no doctor, so I don't know how bad it hurts when some dude pops your cauliflower ear. I will say this: from where I was sitting - reclined on my couch - it looked like if Thompson took one more shot to the ear the damn thing was going to fall off.
Up until the bell to start round three though, Kimbo looked pedestrian. Actually, he looked like exactly who he is - a brawler trying to make a name for himself in MMA.
James Thompson isn't a superstar by any means and he made one of the most famous MMA fighter on the planet look out of place at times. The fact that nothing was done when Thompson had Kimbo pinned and pummeled during the second round speaks more to CBS and the need for a good fight than Kimbo's defensive prowess, because quite frankly, he doesn't have any.
Bottom line: Kimbo Slice got really lucky tonight. I hate to say this, but Dana White was right.
White challenged Kimbo's legitimacy as a heavyweight contender, arguing that he hadn't proven anything in MMA yet and therefore didn't deserve a headline spot, especially on the inaugural foray into "free TV" on CBS.
Watching the fight tonight, Douchebag Dana has never been more right.
Any number of the fighters who comprise the UFC heavyweight division would have dismantled Kimbo Slice. He was simply lucky that James Thompson isn't the same caliber fighter as Gabriel Gonzaga or Brandon Vera, not to mention what a guy like Couture or Minotauro would have done to him.
Kimbo admitted post-fight that he has a long way to go, which I must say was good to hear. Hopefully, some of the ridiculous hype surrounding him will now die down and he can head back to the gym, train like a madman and come back even stronger next time.
And hopefully, I'll never have to say that Dana White was right again.

DANA WHITE IS A FIRST RATE DOUCHEBAG, BUT HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT KIMBO

CBS also went over the 2 hours they scheduled for the fights by about 40 minutes. They need to learn how to pace the show better. They insulted their fans intelligence by having Frank Shamrock explain the basics of MMA for a 5-7 minute segment at the start of the show. It was informative if you have never seen it, but still you'd have to be living under a rock to have never seen it. It would be someone spending longer than 2 minutes explaining the rules of Texas Hold'Em to a television viewer.
I enjoy the commentary of Gus Johnson in other sports especially during the NCAA March Madness, but stick him to the interviews and let Shamrock and the guy with the cool voice be a two man commentary team. Or alternate fights with him. I thought Gus did a good job but you don't need a three man crew.
I thought the biggest crap on that card was when they stopped the Lawler/Smith fight because they didn't want to give Smith five minutes to recover from a simple eye gouge. I think CBS was definitely feeling the time crunch. But then again why did it take them 20 minutes after that fight cleared out of the ring to start the main event?
