NFL fans want their favorite team's players out of the headlines during the off season. Typically players in the news are either bitching about their contracts or getting arrested, obviously neither is good, especially the law part.
The 2008 off season has been no different.
Recently, NFL WRs have been the focus of the media's attention with Ocho Cinco and Plaxico wanting new deals.
Marvin Harrison's (HUH?) gun possibly being linked to a shooting, Javon Walker getting rolled in a Vegas robbery, Chris Henry getting banned from the NFL indefinitely after being charged for another criminal offense(he was recently acquitted) and Broncos Brandon Marshall involved in a domestic assault.
Titans Brandon Jones was busted for carrying an illegal weapon through the Nashville airport and Steelers WR Cedric Wilson allegedly hit his ex-girlfriend. Dwayne Jarrett blew a .12 for a DUI (that's it?, kinda weak pigs) and Bills' Roscoe Parrish picked up the same charge as well.
Jag WR Matt Jones was busted for cutting up lines of blow in a parked car.
Always fighting with the WRs for touches and not to be shown up by their professional football brethren, NFL RBs have racked up an impressive rap sheet.
Bears RB Cedric Benson entered a new slang abbreviation into the lexicon with his BWB (Boating While Black) incident in Lake Travis, outside of Austin, Texas. Benson claimed he was unfairly targeted and eyewitness accounts seemed to back up his version. I can see the BWB potential in the situation. (Young black dudes in a big boat with white bikini clad girls and Texas Lake cops)
The Bears believed Benson's story and it appeared he would keep his job. Then Benson got popped for DWI weeks later in Austin and the Bears let go the former high NFL draft pick.
Benson is still unemployed and a Texas judge has required him to install a ignition interlock breathalyzer in his car.
Bills RB Marshawn Lynch has been the target of a month long investigation into a possible hit and run offense, near a Buffalo nightspot area. (Insert Buffalo club joke here) Lynch's SUV definitely hit a 27 year old woman but doubts remained whether Lynch was the driver. A grand jury was about to convene over the incident when Lynch reached a deal with authorities and will plead down to a traffic offense, avoiding a serious criminal charge.
Cardinals RB JJ Arrington (yes, he still plays) was involved in a North Carolina night club brawl and was charged with disorderly conduct.
Titans RB Lendale White faces a July trial for citations issued after an alleged incident in Denver on March 15.
Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw, who was instrumental in the GMen's title run, served a 30 day jail sentence in Southwest Virginia for violating parole. No one knows what happened, but the original crime occurred when he was a minor.
Although Travis Henry did not grace a police blotter, he was let go by the Broncos and his work ethic was publicly questioned by Mike Shanahan. This is bad news for Henry, who is borderline broke, and his 9 children. No word on Henry's website of a new NFL gig.
Not all news is bad for NFL RBs as Miami's Ricky Williams is looking good in workouts and will compete for the starting job. Rickey was never really a criminal and he just admitted to enjoy puffing mary jane to chill his anxiety and I can respect that.
