WAIT, THE OLYMPICS START NEXT WEEK?

by WCT, The Ship of Fools

Honestly, do you even care that The Olympics begin on August 8th? Sure, it should be fun to watch our basketball team brutalize every team that they face (they beat Canada by 55 points over the weekend. Without LeBron James) and it should be interesting to see how 41-year old Dara Torres does in swimming (even though mainstream media d-bags continue to make baseless allegations about her possible drug use). But other than that, is anything blowing your skirt up about these games?

How many Olympians can you even name? Where are the stars? It used to be there were big names that we looked forward to seeing on the international stage (Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Mark Spitz, etc) who do we have now? Michael Phelps I guess is a big name, but who else? Some of the athletes seem to be hot chicks, so we have that going for us (which is nice) but there aren't a whole lot of household names going into these Olympics.

And has an approaching Olympics ever had less fanfare than this one? Yeah, there was a lot of talk about how dirty the air is in Beijing, and we have seen pictures of the bizarre Olympic Stadium that they built over there, but what else have you heard? Are there events we should be looking forward to seeing? Before reading this post, did you even know that the Olympics were starting next week?

Maybe I'm completely wrong, maybe all of you are breathless with anticipation and have been counting down the the minutes till the August 8th Opening Ceremonies. But it seems like if we didn't have a 40-something swimmer and a dominant basketball team, there would be absolutely no coverage of the upcoming games whatsoever.
