Scott Boras is currently representing the second overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pedro Alvarez. He is expected to be one of the best players in the coming years and should be on the fast track to the major leagues. The signing deadline for the MLB draft was August 15th at midnight stating that no players could sign after the deadline.
We come across this Fanhouse article today stating that the MLBPA has filed a grievance over the fact that the contract with the Pirates was signed after the deadline thus making the contract null and void. MLB believes that Boras is trying to get some more money out of the Pirates instead of honoring a deal. This means that we have a little problem in the situation.
I spoke with Darren Heitner who is the CEO of Dynasty Athlete Representation, LLC about the situation. He told me the following:
Collective bargaining agreements are as worthless as the paper they are printed on if they are not adhered to by both negotiating parties. If Pedro Alvarez is given 45 minutes, then next year’s 2nd pick will try to get 90 minutes. Where does it end?I look at this situation in a similar light as Heitner but believe that Scott Boras is a bad guy for Amateur Baseball players as Boras is trying to bend rules with a ton of contract negotiations and the better you are for a player the more he tries to bend the rules. This is the second time in the past few months that Boras has gotten involved with a rules issue. He wrote a letter for Andrew Oliver to Oliver's former agent which broke NCAA rules thus making Oliver ineligble for the NCAA Regional tournament.
What is your opinion of Scott Boras?
