I ran across this clip from the 1930's of something that sort of looks like kickboxing, except it looks like the 'athletes' were slightly less, how shall I put this, um, manly, than today's MMA superstars.

It is Savate, which is much less gay than it looks in this video. Check out "The Human Weapon" episode about Savate and you'll see how tough it is. I mean, it's no Krav Maga, but it's okay.
