SNL back? Please...

by Andrew, The Grand National Championships

Okay, I'll admit it. Saturday Night Live has been so bad for so long that last Saturday's episode of decency was almost a revelation. People are becoming unguled. The Debate sketch was legendary. Mark Wahlberg talking to animals!

MARK WAHLBERG'S TALKING TO A DOG! THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER!

But let's be honest. This is merely a desperate mass of America who so needs a good sketch comedy program that they will take decent and turn it into great. Really. The only way SNL is reviving is because people in the media are trying to will it so.

And I'll tell you why.

Point 1: Tina Fey.

Now she's made the cold opens watchable. And she's definitely a part of the cachet that this season of SNL is developing. But that's also a problem. She has her own show. And if McCain loses? There's no reason for here to play comedy Wonder Woman and save the day. By January, Palin may be a footnote. And so will Fey.

Point 2: The Cast.

In spurts, Andy Samberg and Bill Hader have shown themselves to be funny. Point of fact, Samberg was able to carry the show through a really dark period with three to nine great digital short minutes in a season. But a star? He is not.

Hader is best when he's with Apatow, because he's happy as a supporting cast member, and the lack of ambition can limit his time on SNL. But the problem? Those who have the ambition are the worst of the bunch.

Fred Armisen is the biggest problem. This would be Darrell Hammond is a man with a thousand voices and a master of none. He has negative charisma, and he's really quite unfunny. And don't get me started on the fact that he's Obama.

Kristen Wiig has worn thin. It's a quasi-attractive lady who has a sense of humor! What? But she plays the same character. Every time. Think about it.

Also, with one sketch on Attack of the Show, Kel has gone upside Keenan's head with his comedy. Did I mention that Kel could do a passable Obama? He could.

Point 3: Mad TV is worse.

Seriously. Have you ever seen that show. It's awful on a stick. And their Obama is better than Armisen!

Call me a comedy fanboy if you will. But hear me now, and believe me later.

This group of SNL girly men.

BYE!
