Epic Carnival | Where Sports and Pop Culture Collide: Mancrush: Mark Teixeira

Mancrush: Mark Teixeira

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

I will be honest that my mancrush with Mark Teixeira started in 2000 when I saw him playing with the USA Collegiate National Team against Chinese Taipei in McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket Rhode Island. He ended up hitting a game winning home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to win the game for Team USA and sending home a sold out stadium happy.

After that night, I started following his collegiate career with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He ended up leading the Yellow Jackets to the College World Series in 2001 where he hit .427 and picked up the Dick Howser Trophy which is the collegiate baseball's version of the Heisman Trophy.

He ended up being drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft to the Texas Rangers. He ended up making the majors in his second professional season in 2003 when he made the Rangers roster out of spring training. He ended up hitting only .259 but had 26 homers in his inaugural campaign. The next season Teixeira broke through grabbing the Silver Slugger Award as the top hitting first baseman and grabbing the gold glove. He was also named to the All-Star team for the first time in that season.

In the last two seasons, he has played for the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim where he continued to be one of the best players in the league. He is currently a free agent who is deciding between playing for the Boston Red Sox or going back to LA to play for the Angels. I hope he comes to the Red Sox as I can have my mancrush every day by watching his sweet switch-hitting swing every day.
