Epic Carnival | Where Sports and Pop Culture Collide: The NEW Garden

The NEW Garden

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

The T.D. Banknorth Garden was built in the early 90's and opened its doors on September 30th 1995 to replace the legendary Boston Garden. The new building is much more luxurious but never had real history until last season. The Boston Bruins made the playoffs last season before losing a seven game series to their longtime adversary Montreal Canadians. The Celtics ended up making the NBA Finals where they defeated their longtime rivals Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

The start of the 2008-2009 NBA and NHL seasons has not changed the attitude of winning that began last season. The Boston Celtics are currently rocking the best record in the NBA at 20-2 with a 12-1 record at the new Garden. They are led by Kevin Garnett who just brings enthusiasm to the building every night with his balls to the wall attitude and making the place rock and roll during key moments.

The Bruins on the other hand are leading the Eastern Conference with a 19-4-4 record with 42 points which is good enough for second in the league behind the San Jose Sharks. They have the best lineup in the league as they can go four lines deep without losing a step. Each line is able to be a threat to opposition's defense. They are led by a young group of players with Phil Kessel leading the team with 17 goals. Another youngster in Milan Lucic brings back memories of Cam Neely with his grit and goal scoring. He has seven goals and 10 assists right now while picking up 53 penalty minutes which is top on the team.

If both of these continue to win, the new Boston Garden will become just as tough of a place to play as the old one was. Remember, Red Auberbach might be dead but we can still turn up the heat in the locker rooms even when it is 85 degrees outside.
